LABOR QUESTIONS.
London, Jan. 18. At a meetingjof the Directors of the various Scotch. Bailway Companies, a prbposarto'comproniise matters in connection with "the strike was declined. The'men remain firm, and the Directors are also determined not to give way. Owing to the strike, the export ship-: ping at' Glasgow has been suspended. Three hundred eoal lumpers attached, the Shipping Federation's men on board the Scotland in the Koyal Albert Deck. The latter fought vigorously; with firearms, picks, and crowbars, finally repelling their assailants. Fortunately, no harm resulted from the shooting.
A general strike is threatened in support of the railway men.

Ah Employers' Mutual Defence fund has been started in the hope pf raising £IOO,OOO for the purpose of forming a fund from which indemnify members for loss by strikes, Stditet, Jan. 19. The Hunter river miners are unable to render any financial assistance to thej miners in New Zealand, as they have to support a thousand of their own members, BRirararEßTOjr, Jan. 19. The Miners' Association met to-day to receive the report of the delegates who went to Mokau to inspect the coal measures there. The report was favorabb, and the members of the Association proceed to Mokau to work the coal mine on the co-operative system. Duhediit, Jan. 19. The Shag Point coal mine is now being worked under non-union rules) most of the miners having accepted the proprietors' terms. The President of the local Union resigned, and the Secretary was dismissed.
