Auckljlnb, Jan, 13. John White, a pakeha Maori, died suddenly in bed during the night, it is believed from heart disease. He came to the colony 59 years ago, and figured prominently in the early history of the colony, He is the author of “ Ancient Maori History.” w Biiiiiirgton, Jan. 14. At the Magistrate’s Court Daniel Jobberns, late of Palmerston North, charged with obtaining goods to the value of £SOO from Arthur and Co., of Glasgow, by alleged false pretences, was remanded to Friday. Woodyillb, Jan. 14. Yesterday a child named Quinlan was drowned in a bucket of water at [ Danevirk. Last evening a woman named Miss Crawford, formerly employed at a hotel, was found dead in a cottage at Danevirk
Bbxjnnebton, Jan. 12. After the train was brought to a standstill at 5 o’clock, Mrs R. Smith got out with a child in her arms, leaving one on the platform. The train started again with a jerk, throwing the child on to the rail underneath the wheel. The child’s head was crushed, and it died. Jan. 14,
The Brunnerton jury who found McLeod, the shunter of the train by which the child Smith was killed, guilty of manslaughter added a rider expressing sympathy with McLeod, and were of opinion that death would not have happened if McLeod had not been hampered with a young man (a cadet), on whom he depended to unlock the waggons from the carriages. The jury condemned the authorities for employing untrained men in responsible and dangerous work. Gbbtmouth, Jan. 13.
At the inquest at Brunnerton this evening on the death of Robert Gregory Smith, killed by a railway carriage, Mr Jones represented the Railway Commissioners, and Mr Guinness the parents of the child. The evidence of the guard, stationmaster, and others was taken, and a verdict of manslaughter was returned against Daniel Malcolm McLeod, shunter, He was committed to appear for trial on the 16th March. Bail was allowed, himself in £IOO, and two sureties of £SO each.
