John Williams alias Allan (u negro), and John Henry Lewis alias Frederick Blythe, were charged at Court to-day with escaping from custody at Milford Sound, where u gang of prisoners are forming a road to Wakatipu, Both pleaded guilty and were remanded for eight days for the evidence of the Milford gaoler. The prisoners escaped on the 30th nit. and walked from Milford to the head of Te Anau, ninety miles, iu three days, in a drenching rain with nothing to oat. They took the steamer there and told the captain they left mates at Milford. They came down in her to the foot of Te Anau, and since then bad been knocking about different stations asking for work. The police received information on Friday and constables were despatched in different directions, a party under Detective Maddern getting on their trail on Saturday at 6.30 p.m. and arrested (hem in (be shearers’ shed at Old Wairaka station before dark. The prisoners bad obtained a change of clothing from some station hands. Both state that they would never go through the same experience again to gain liberty.
