GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.

The monthly meeting of this board was held yesterday. Present—Messrs P. R. Flatman (chairman), 3L Brophy, A. Metcalf, and J. Kelland. The overseer said be was requested to apologise for the absence of Mr DeEenzy. TKNDIKS. Tenders were opened and dealt with as follows; Contract No, 328 Formation, cuttings, and culvert, near Meredith’s, Kakabu "Valley: T. Daly, £57 2s; J. Beckley, £34 15s 0d; T. Sugrue, £BO, COBBBSPONDENCE.

Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows;—■ From Mr T, McQ-illicuddy, offering the sum of 10s for the right to cut cocksfoot grass seed in one of the board’s reserves, near Orari. From Mr T. Finch, postmaster, Geraldine, re the new issue of the Government Postal Guide. From Messrs Smithson, Raymond and Smith re the legal proceedings taken for rates overdue; advising the board as to how the cases had been disposed of, and enclosing account for work done.

Prom Mr J. Williams, Receiver of Land Eevenue, advising the board of the sum ©f £79 4s 5d having been lodged to their credit, being third of proceeds of Government reserves sold at Bangitata, Belfield, Orari, Geraldine, etc. Prom Mr B. P. Sealey, enclosing cheque for rates, and stating that illness had prevented him attending to the matter before, and objecting in strong terms to having been compelled almost to rise from a sick bod to receive service of a summons. - The board considered they had simply done their duty, and that the letter was quite uncalled for.

From Mr J. M, Barker, asking to he allowed to erect a gate across the road.—Granted, on the usual conditions. —It was decided to strictly carry out the resolution of the board with regard to having gates upon roads properly hung. From Mr T. Sugrue, asking for an extension of time for completing his contract. OVERDUE BATES. A list of persons who had not yet paid their rates was read over, and it was decided to hand the list over to the solicitor for collection. 00E8E TOOK HOADS. A discussion took place re the gorse upon roads. Members thought they should be as strict with regard to the gorse growing upon the roads as they ware with the rates; After considering the matter it was decided to allow it to lie in abeyance till after harvest, and then deal with delinquents with a firm hand. TINANCIAD. Proposed by Mr J. Holland, seconded by Mr Brophj, and carried—“ That deposit No. 257,812, £SOO, falling duo on 21st inet. at the Bank of New Zealand, Geraldine, be redeposited with the same hank for six months, the interest accrued to be placed to current account with the Bank of New South Wales; also, that the sum of £SOO, being deposit No. 624, lodged with the Bank of New South Wales, he placed to current account with interest accrued with the same bank.” ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £264 6s lOd were passed for payment. EIGHT OF WAT. Mr J, Holland asked the board to grant him a permanent right of way through the hoard’s quarry reserve at Gapes’s Yalley. If this were granted he could get to his laud with a very small outlay, but otherwise it would cost him about £2O to obtain an entrance. He explained the relative position of the land and the reserve to each other and to the road. After discussing the matter it was considered that the hoard had not the pewer to grant a permanent right of way. Permission to cross the reserve was granted, and applicant was advised to apply to the chief surveyor for a road to be laid off through the reserve, Ihe members expressing their willingness for the road to be laid off if required. INTERVIEW. Mr J. Fergusson wailed upon the board, and asked permission to put a gate across the road at the top corner of bis section.—Granted on the usual conditions. OTBHSEEE’a REPORT. The overseer’s report was read and dealt with as follows: — “Sir, —I have the honor to report for the information of the board as under—

“Owing to the holidays very little work - has been done during the past month. Contract No. 325—Shingle and earthwork near Opnba Station : This work will be completed in about one week from date. The shingle is all out, and the cuttings finished, the only work remaining being the breaking of the atones put out with the gravel from the pits, which are very rough and difficult to work. The time of this contract expired on the 30th Deo., 1890. No, 327, painting and repairs to office and dwelling, has been completed in a satisfactory manner, and passed for payment. Gorge—l have inspected the gorse on the roads complained of by Mr Loogley, and find it to be growing about 10 feet out from the fence line and encroaching on the formed toad. Day men —The day man have been- employed in spreading shingle on contracts, repairing, tarring and painting bridges, and clearing the various river crossings for the harvest machines. It was also necessary to repair and board partition the sheep yards at the pound. A good number of sheep have been in the yards during the past month. Small birds—A very large number of birds’ eggs have been brought in since last meeting. The schools being closed has caused the increase. Rates—l have collected since las board day the sum ef £330 14s Bd, making a total to date of £919 4s. This leaves a balance of £36 16s 4d outstanding, principally in small sums under one pound sterling.—l am, &c., “ W. Shxeks, “ Overseer.”

It was decided to give Mr Lewis notice to have the gorse complained of by Mr Longley by March 31,1890; and to hand to the board’s solicitor the list'of defaulting ratepayers. The meeting then terminated.
