WINCHESTER PUBLIC SCHOOL.
The distribution of prizes in connection with the above school took place on Friday, Dec. 19th, Our report has unavoidably been held over owing to miscarriage of prize list. The occasion was celobrated by a concert, which proved one of the most enjoyable ever held in Winchester. The hall was well filled, the chair being taken by Mr A. W. Ensor, chairman of the School Committee. Between the first and second portions of the programme the prizes were distributed by the Rev. T. A. Hamilton who delivered a brief but appropriate address. The following programme was gone through successfully, many items being loudly applauded : Overture, pianoforte, Misses Gimson; recitation, ' The captive,' Miss A McCarthy; song, ' Two lovely black eyes,' Mr Chambers; duet, 'Friendship,' Misses Gay and Bruce ; recitation,' The eve of Quartre Bras,' Master Charles Gimson; violin solo, 'Life let us Cherish,' Mr F McCarthy; song, ' Pierot,' Miss A Gimson; song, ' Life is a River,' Rev T A Hamilton; recitation, 'Curfew must not ring to-night,' Mr C C McCarthy; song,' The devoted apple,' Miss Cox; violin solo, ' Last rose of summer,' Mr F McCarthy; recitation, 'Forgive,' Miss Emma Baillie ; song, ' Over the sea,' Mr Barrett; song, 'Delight,' Miss Cox; comic song, Mr Chambers; song, ' Ever of thee,' Rev T A Hamilton ; song, ' Fiddle and I,' Miss Gimson; recitation, 'Village blacksmith,' Miss Alice Gimson ; bagpipe music, Mr Mabin. The prize list is ae follows : Standard Vll.—James Curtis 1, R Austin 2. Standard Vl.—Will Gimson 1, J Shallard 2, Standard V.—C Gimson 1, 8 Cripps 2, E Hide 3. Standard IT.—J Cripps 1, J Wilson 2, L Ensor 3, F Cameron 4, M Austin 5, A McCarthy 6. Standard lII.—R Hart 1, T Twigg 2, E Baillie 3. P Shallard 4. Standard lI.—W Moss 1, S Donnithorne 2, C McCarthy 3, J Deßensy 3*, A Austin 5, M Moore 6, A Cripps 7, S Webster 8, L Baillie 9, M Mcintosh 10. Standard L—R Cameron 1, E Hide 2, H Page 3, M Woodley 4, G Gill urn 5, H Paterson 6, M Kennedy 7. The prizes were procured from the establishment of Messrs P W Hutton tind Co, 'I imaru. All below Standard I. were presented with books. At the globo of the proceedings Mr McCarthy, in a very neat speech, thanked the performers for their services. He also moved a vote of thanks to the Rev Hamilton, who, he said, was always ready to take an active part in furthering any good object. At the close of the concert an enjoyable dance took place.
