GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the Geraldine County Council was held on Wednesday, Present Messrs W. Balfour (chairman), W. B. Howell, It. Mackay, R A. Barker, and J. M. Barker.
Messrs C. Bissett and W. Stewart, Orari, asked leave to take water by a branch race to their Reserve 1400, the water now running to, waste from the Newlands branch.—Applicants to be allowed to make the race at their own expense, provided that no one else is injured by their taking the water.
Mr A. J. Andrews, Waitohi Elat, wrote giving notice that he should claim compensation for any damage done to his land by the cutting of a water race through it. Mr D, Heffernan applied to have a short loop-race from Mr Stevenson’s land to give water on the main road opposite his house. Engineer to attend to the matter.
Only one tender was received for supplying 1000 dog collars —E. H, Brewer (Temuka), prices s£d to 6£d for sizes from 15 j i, to 24 x It inches. —Accepted. Mr Howell suggested that the badges should be ef different metal for each year, brass one year, copper the next, so that the policemen could more easily distinguish new from old collars.
Correspondence with sub-registrars of dogs of last year showed that all but one were willing to act for the current year at 6d per collar, the tax being reduced to 2s 6d on stock dogs. A special meeting was fixed to be held on January 7th, to pass a by-law repealing the present by-law No. 2, relating to traction engine traffic over bridges, and enacting a new one applicable to all bridges, and to make and levy a rate of a -£d in the £ on the Waitohi water district, to provide interest on the watea-race loan. Mr Howell asked what was the position of the Pareora bridge litigation. He thought it was time the apneal was settled one way or other, and he would give notice to move at next meeting that the counoil call for tenders for the construction of the bridge. Mr Howell moved, Mr Mackay seconded, and it was carried—“ That the engineer be instructed to prepare an estimate of cost of running a stock bridge to connect the Tengawai bridge with the south bank, and repairing the present bridge for traffic on a reduced width.”
A request was received from the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, for early payment of a second moiety of the loeal bodies’ contributions for the current year, total £626 18s. Accounts amounting to £15510a 7d were passed for payment.
The council went into committee to consider a motion by Mr R. A. Barker proposing to appoint a permanent overseer, instead of professional engineers from time to time, The matter was eventually postponed.
