GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of this '. board was held yesterday. Present— J Messrs F. It. Flatman (chairman), A, Metcalf, J. Kelland, and K. ; Brophy. An apology for non-attend-ance was received from Mr DeEenzy. TESTDEBS. Tenders were opened and dealt with as follows: Contract No. 327—Painting, papering, and repairs at Eoad Board office— J. D. Gore, £l7 10«; H. S. Pratt, £l2 15a 6d; J. Cooper, £l2 10s (accepted). COEBESPONDEWCK. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows : Prom Mr N. Tangney, Winchester, asking the board to take steps to prevent the gorse growing on the road in front of section 53, reserve 389, in possession of Joseph Lewis, and facing on Cameron's road\ He assurred the board that the fence bad not been cut siace 1879.—-The overseer was instructed to report on the same at the next meeting. From the South Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, enclosing a return of persons receiving charitable aid in the district. From the Greraldine County Council, advising the board that the second moiety of the board's contribution tp

the Charitable Aid Board, £94 9s*2d, was now due, and requesting the amount to be forwarded. —Cheque to be sent. In connection with the above it was pointed out that the Koad Board was paying the Charitable Aid Board the ■mm of £IBB 18s 4d per year, and the amount received in the district for charitable aid waa only £27 12* per j annum. The members thought they were entitled to have further information as to what was done with the balance of the money paid by the road board. It was decided to endorse the return to the effect that the C. A. board should forward a copy of their balancesheet to each board. It was also pointed out that in one case in the district the Charitable Aid Board had demanded of a person who owned a ■mall section and a shell of a house to put bis head in, that he should deposit his deeds with the board before he could receive any aid. From Mr T. Kelhher, stating that when tendering for the contract at , Rhubarb Flat he had made a mistake, as the road was specified a chain wide whereas he read it as half a chain wide. —It was detided that as there were two tenders for the same amount and applicant got the contract by lot the board regretted they could not grant the request. From Mr A. Maxwell, again apply- . ing to haue the road formed from the corner of Mr McCutcheon's section to j where the formation ends, so as to I allow of his getting an engine on to ' his land for threshing purposes,--It f 1 w was decided that the Board could not 1 grant the request. 1 From Mr J. Mr B. P. Cochrane waited on the board, and asked permission to be allowed to make an open crossing in the "Woodbury road to get rid of the water from the race. The overseer's report was read and dealt with as follows: — SiR,T— 1 have the honor to repert for month ending date as under : Owing to tbe extreme dryness of the weather very little work baa been done during tbe month. Contracts 2324, Jeesop's road, has been completed aod passed for payment. No. 325—Very little work has been done on this contract, and as the time for completion expired some time since I think, under the circumstances, it would be advisable to cancel the contract. The daymen hove been employed in tarring and painting and repairs to bridges, and odd pba on various roads, An the trees in several of the plantations are too crowded and many of tfaem Buffering from blight (especially the Scotch firß), I should think it would be advisable to have them thinned out by catting down the last mentioned trees. I have reoeived on rate account the sum of £583 19< 4d. There is sttll a large amount outstanding. Ihave purchased a quantity of birds' eggs during the month. They are, however, not offering iu such large quantities as last year.—l am, &c. W. Shxbrs, It was decided to pay for the work done on contract No. 322 and cancel the contract, also to thin out the trees in some of the plantations. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £222 5s 5d were passed for payment, aod the meeting terminated.
