GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Geraldine County Council was held yesterday. Present—Messrs W. Balfour (chairman), Moore, Barker, Howell, and Quinn.

A discussion took place on the work to be done at the next meeting, the general county election falling due in the interim (on the 12tb), the meeting of the new council for election of chairman being fixed by statute for Wednesday, 26 th inst. The result of tbe poll on the proposal to borrow £3OOO for watersupply purposes at Waitohi, in favor of tbe scheme, was received from the Substitute Returning Officer.

Mr G. Grosser, ranger, reported all well on the Sesdown system, except a few stoppages through rubbish blowing in during the windy weather.

Mr Radford, clerk of works, reported on new branch supplies at Eangitata, About 18 miles of new

races had been made in that district lately. Mr Barker reported that, as requested, he bad seen Mr Hawke about making a new channel for a short distance in the Waihi at his property to cut off a curve. The neighbours interested had agreed to the tvork being done, and Mr Lewis would contribute if the work was a success. The cost was estimated at £5, of which Mr Hawke offered £2.

Accounts were passed for payment to the amount of £137 3s 4d. It was decided to charge each water district a percentage on the rates collected to cover the office expenses of collection. On the motion of Mr Moore, seconded by Mr Barker, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr Balfour for his conduct ©f the business of the council during the past year as chairman. Both members spoke eulogistic of Mr Balfour’s services. Mr Balfour briefly responded, and the meeting terminated.
