Mb Rhodes at Temuka. —Mr A. E. Q-. Rhodes will address the electors of Geraldine in the Temukv Volunteer Hall this evening. Wool Salks. —The Christchurch Woolbrokers' Association have fixed the following dates for this season’s sales November 6'h, November 21st, December 18th, January 23rd, 1891. Waitohi Water Supply. —Ratepayers are reminded that the poll on the proposal of the Geraldine County Council to borrow £3OOO for irrigrtion works in the Waitohi Flat district takes place to-morrow. Death Op A Pioneer. —Mr James Garwood, one of the principal residents of Akaroa, died on Tuesday night, aged 59 He was a ‘pilgrim,’ and helped to print the first number of the Lyttelton Times. Entertainment at Geraldine.— Our readers are reminded that the entertainment in aid of the Geraldine Brass Band take* place in the Oddfellows’ Hall to morrow. The programme is of a very varied and attractive kind, and ought to ensure a full house.

District Honors, —Mr K. Matthews’ Clydesda'a en'ire Prince, by Young Banker, bred in the Tmuika district, secured second honors at 'lie Ellesmere Agricul'ural and Pnstornl Show. WbbbtiinO. —A wrestling match for £SO a side and the championship of the world, between D. 0. Hoes, champion af America, and Harry Dunn, champion of Australia, came < II at Dunedin on Tuesday sight, .and was won by Dunn, who, though giving away 2st., was in the fittest condition. Five styles were wrestled, Boss securing falls in ‘ Q »» 1 oRoman’ and ‘Catch-as-eatoh-oan.’ Dunn secured falls in American, Side-hold, Oollar-and-elhow, Cornish, and Devonshire. Another match for double slakes is to come off in private. Am Acrobatic Cow. —Mr Evan Vallender, butober, of Tanaka, possesses a cow that yvould not disgrace the Wild West Show. She has very curly horns, and when griming in the yard at tho back of Mr Yallender’s premises managed in some inroncsivable way to get the end of a 30lt. scaffolding pol hooked through them. In her endeavors to gel rid of the encumbrance it worked further on,- and later on she was found with it fairly balanced. Unfortunately for the cow the pole became entangled in the fence, aud she , was fairly fixed until released by Mr 8. Clinch.
A Loss. —Mr W.Deßeczy has suffered a severe loss in the death of his wellknown horse Road Metal, which, owing to an accident when in training, bad to be shot. Road Metal was by Betrayer, out of Nancy, and had earned for himself a very creditable character during his short racing career. He was a pnzsuker on several occasions at the Timaru sod Christchurch Agricultural and Pastoral Shows, and had he been destined for the siud would have doubtless been a popular sire, combing as he did the best strains of racing bleed in the colony. B.M. Court, Timaru.— At the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Timaru, on Tuesday, Thomas Atkinson was charged with sterling a pocket-book from John Lowry and about 80s in money. The men cams to Timaru together, and, with one or two others, were drinking. Lowry took off hie coat, and the accused wns seen to take the pook'b book out of Lowry’s pocket snd make off. Ho was sentenced to six weeks’ imprironmem with hard laber. Daniel Mann, charged with stealing a £5-nola and a book valued at 8s from Oniaid snd McLeod, Burke’s Pa-*#, was remarried until Monday, as was also Edward L. Psrceyal, charged wits forgery and uttormg.
I.O.GKT. —The usual weekly meeting of the Welcome Retreat Lodge of Qood Templars took place on Monday last, Bro. J. M. butherlaad presiding. One member was re-obligated, one candidate initiated, and two proposed fur membership. The following ofioers were elected for the ensuing term :—Bro J M Sutherland, 0.T., re-elected j Bro J D Gere, V.l.j Bro I Baxter, PO.T, j Sister Gaiger, 0. • Bro J Herdman, Treasurer; Bro J Kenningtoo, G.; Bro H Howard, jun., ■*.; Bro W S Matlin, F. 3, The D. 8., Bto W E Barker, addressed the members,' and gave them a number of valuable hints and *ugg<stions as to the working of the lodge, nnd the duly of each individual Good Templar. He was awarded a hearty vote of thank* for his address. It was decided to open the lodge next Monday evening at 7 o’clock instaad of half-past seven, on account of the Primitive Methodist Church anniversary tea. Tbmdka Litebabt SootßTr. — The close of the second session of the above Society was celebrated by a social gathering in the OddfeiloW*’Hall on Tuesday evening. The weather was very threatening and m 1 tated against the attendance. A fair number, however, of both sexes put in an appearance and made up by their social qualities for lack of numbers. Mr A. Bussell occupied the chair while a short programme of music, recitations, etc., was gone through. In this the M'sses G. and L. Brown, F. Guy, and E. Lee, and Messrs Whit-head, McOaskill, W. Cooper, J. Rennie, and G. H. Mogridgo took part. The songs were much enjoyed, and the recitations, which were all of a humorous character, highly appreciated. After refreshments bad been pa>ta*en ‘of games of draughts, cribbage, etc., were indulged in, while conversation went pleasantly on. The evening’s amusement was concluded with an impromptu dauce, which was evidently enjoyed. Universal regret was expressed that the termination of so many pleasant evenings bad arrived, and before separating hearty votes of thanks were accorded to the performers and ell who had assisted in making the several gatherings so agreeable.
