The twenty-fifth annual show of the Tinaaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held last Tuesday and Wednesday on the show ground, Wai-iti. As usual the first day was devoted to judging sheep, and the attendance was small, a fact which was in a measure due to the very boisterous character of the weather. The weather on the second day was very fine, and the attendance large. The show on the whole was a great success. We have, as usual, to acknowledge our indebtedness to tbo courtesy and civility of the secretary, Mr F; W. Stubbs,

SHEEP. The show of sheep was very good. As was the case last year in the fine sotnbing merino class Messrs A. B, Smith and H. Hoare had the lion’s share of the honors. Mr Tripp had two exhibits only in this class and these got prizes. In the strong combing merino class the competitors were Messrs C. G. Tripp and A, M. Clark, and they showed excellent sheep. Mr Clark owned the greater number of sheep, and got the larger number of prizes, but Mr Tripp got first prizes for all his exhibits. In English Leiceaters the principal exhibitors were Messrs A. M. Clark and Bonifant, but the greater portion of the prizes fell to Mr Clark, who exhibited mag* nificent sheep, perhaps some of the finest ever seen at the Timarn show. These .were bred by the late Mr A, Grant, and were a credit to the district. In Border Leicesters the competitors were more numerous, bat the competition really lay between Messrs Little Bros, and Mr Murdoch, the former being the more successful, taking the championship. The Jtf.Z. and A. Land Company got three second prizes, but the remainder of the honors went to the first named competitors. Iu Lincolns the competition was limited to Messrs Bruce and McLaren and Mr A. M. Clark. Mr Clark had fewer exhibits than his rivals, but with these secured first prizes, and also the championship for a splendid ram. In the Eomney Marsh the N.Z. and A. Land Company were the only exhibitors, and Mr Bristol was the only exhibitor in Soulhdowns. Both of these got their prizes without competition. For fat wethers and lambs Mr A. M, Clark brought home an uncontested prize, and in freezers he took all before as well as securing the special prize of the National Mortgage and Agency Company. On the whole the competition in sheep was not large, and though the quality was excellent it cannot be said that the show was better than last year’s.

HOBBES. The entries for horses this season, although smaller in number than for the previous year, were for all round quality hard to beat. This was especially noticeable in the draught which were an exceptionally good lot. The first prize fell to “ No Surrender, ’’ an Oamaru horse, while Mr E. T. Rhode’s Bonny Breast Knot, by Young Banker, out of Princess Royal,, was placed second. Of unplaced, horses, Mr Jas. Austin’s Craigievar was much, admired, and this borse is yet destined to catch the judges ey® in more than one show ring. The several classes compromises in the the heading “ other horses ” Killed fairly well, and the quality was again undemnable. For the best thorough bred stallion, the well known horse Bundoora secured first place. Mr Robert Mahoney’s borse Ravenscraig being second. Lord John, a coaching stallion by Berlin exhibited by Mr Jonn Shaw, arrived too late for competiton, a regrettable fact, as his quality is commendable,

and he is certainly one of the best of Berlin’s much-enquired fur stock. According to a Dunedin paper, Berlin’s stock are all ihe rage in Glasgow at the present time. Some very useful, aa well a* stylish, animals were shown among weight carriers and harness horses, but it is to be regretted that this class is so poorly supported in such a district like this, admirably adapted as it is for the breeding of real first-class horses of this description. The judging of Hunters, as usual attracted a deal of attention and there was a k«en contest for places. All the horse* jumped well, although one or two mistakes were made, owing to the difficulty of getting the horses to face a crowd. Taken altogether, however, the exhibition was a most creditable one. In the class for the best gelding Mr Eobt. Davie whose name is associated with many victories in the Show rings at Timam and elsewhere took first prize with Nugget and Mr John Murrey of Orari second with Prince a useful horse bred on the Estate. For the best mare in foal or with foal at foot there were only two entries. Mr James Austin taking both awards, He was also successful in the next class for dry mares, Molly Darling, by Young Banker dam Dady Don, taking first prize, Princess Eoyal, out of the same mare, being highly commended. Mr Henry Mitchell took second place with a goad looking mare by Young Banker, a sire whose stock are making records all over the colony. The young draught stock were all shown good condition, and were a most creditable lot. {

CATTLE. p|Every year the entries for this class appear to fall off, and upon this occasion little or no interest was manifested in th© exhibits. In fat cattle Mr A. M. Clark was the only exhibitor, with the exception of Mr James Tasker, who secured let in class 100 for best fat cow or heifer. The principal prizes in Ayrshire cattle fell to Messrs Rogeraon and Fleming, of Waitaki, Mr E. T. Rhodes nod Mrs Celin Campbell being the other exhibitors. There is evidently some fresh regulations required or some changes to be desired to induce more competition in the cattle section of the •how. IMPLEMENTS AND MACHINERYThe display of «li classes of agricultural iroplemen»B and machinery was excellent and far excelled that ©f any previous paar. Messrs Williams and Colvile, of Temaka, showed their Z-al«nriia Wirtowers and seed separators, 3 s zas. These were most creditably got up, and received

favorable attention from the farmers present. Messrs Carston Bros., of Winchester, exhibited a Dogcart, Whi'echapd cart and Farmer’s cart. All were well finished and speak highly for our local industries. A feature of the exhibits woretho various harvesting machines. Of these the Deering, Massey, Hornsby, McCormick, Brantford, and Ruckeye were represented. The new dfitameless Buckeye attracted much atten'*tion, as it displayed quite a new departure in this class of machinery. The Wo'ee'ey sheep-shearing /machine, exhibited by Mr Melville Gray, was the source of attraction throughout the day, people thronging to it even when the jumping co test was going oc. The exhibits of Messrs Andiewe and Beaven, Reid sod Gray, P. and D. Duncan, and Booth and Macdonald w< re excellent, and Mpssi a Priest and Holdgate had a display of useful garden implements. Some extra exhibits were some cooking ranges snown by Messrs Scott Bros., and a portable hose reel invented and trade by Captain Woollcombs. This was an ingenious arrangement for saving garden or other hose from -‘kinking’ when being coiled. Mr Frank*, of the Eclipse Bone Works, Temuka, ehowed some samples of his manures. These compared v-ry favorably with other exhibits and were considered quite equal to those of older makers. A novelty was shown by Messrs Priest and Holdgate in the stripe of a Umbieeder. This is a square box to which teats like those of a baby’s feeding bottle are attached. The milk is put into the box, and the lambs suck it through the teats as they would their mothers. Another novelty in the shape of a potato planter was exhibited by Messrs Booth and Macdonald. Th ; s ia a contrivaoc« which is placed on the top of a plough, *nd consists of an iron arrangement with a wbsel that turns round and lets the potatoes drop into the furrow made by the plough at the proper distances apart. It is a very ingenious affair, and is bound to become popular.
