A NEST OF GAMBLERS.
WELLINGTON, Oct. 27
About ten last night Detectives Campbell and Herbert raided a place of business in Willis street, which for a long time has been supposed to be a resort of gamblers. By a piece of
strategy the detectives managed to gain admittance at the first door, but as soon as the doorkeeper saw he had been "had" he touched an electric bell, which gave a signal within the gambling room; all lights were extinguished and there was a general rush to get outside, A dice box, thickly padded was found in the gambling room, but a very small amount of cash was collected, and it was mostly small silver pieces. It is supposed the game being played was " hazard." There was also a large table in the room with long forms each side which would accommodate about forty persons. Between twenty and thirty men of the spieler claBS were in the room, bat only the names of fourteen were obtained and they will be summoned, together with the proprietor of the house. The police have laid information against Charles Cress, proprietor of the shop on which they raided last night, charging bim with keeping a common gaming house.
