GERALDINE TOWN BOARD.

The first meeting of the newlyelected members of this board was held on Tuesday evening last. Present—'Messrs N. Dunlop, J. Williams, A. Sherratt, R. Hammond, A. White, J. Mundell, and W. S. Maslin: The constitution of the board is the same as before the election, with the exception that R. Hammond occupies the seat formerly held by Mr RTaylor, the latter having removed to Woodbury. ELECTION OP CHAIRMAN. The clerk occupied the chair while a chairman was elected, Mr A. White being unanimously chosen to fill the position. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows : From the returning officer, forwarding the names of persons elected as commissioners of the board, and enclosing his account for acting as returning officer, From Mr J. A. Quin, asking the board to fence off the piece of land used for the Fire Brigade station, as he was about to fence the reserve adjoining.—Work to be done, and the fence round the willows to be re-; paired. From Mr R. Taylor, asking for T.S. Nob. 27 and 44 to be included in those transferred from himself to Mr Post. —Mr Post's consent to be obtained. From Mr J. Aitken, secretary to the Presbyterian Church, Geraldine, asking the board to provide and erect a lamp opposite the Presbyterian Church, the church committee agreeing to maintain the same when erected.— After discussing the question it was decided that as the summer months were now coming on the letter and the whole question of extra lighting should be left in abeyance till the necessity fjr dealing with the same arose. THE BOARD'S LEASES. A copv of an agreement to give a lease, prepared by the board's solicitors, was received, and also a letter ■from their solicitors with regard to the same. The agreement was read over and approved of. "WANDERING CATTLE. The ranger's report for the month was read. Mr Mundell drew attention to the Dumber of horses and cattle that were allowed to wander about the town at all hours, of the night. Asphalt and j other improvements carried out by the board were destroyed, fences broken, and the paths given a dirty and neglected appearance by the wandering animals. Mr Maslin pointed out that hitherto the ranger had not been allowed to pound off the flat, and consequently it had been overrun with cattle which, I as soon as his back was turned, came out on to the streets. It was unanimously decided that the ranger should receive strict instructions to pound off all streets in the town district, and to be especially [ particular with regard to the roads leading to the bush. OYERSEBR'S REPORT. ! The Overseer's report was read. It was decided that the works committee should take steps to have the lamps repaired during the next moonlight evenings. With regard to the gorse growing on the streets it was decided —" That the works committee be empowered to have cut or removed all gorse fences within the town district growing in the streets, or likely to become dangerous to buildings by fire, and that the byrlaw dealing with this matter be strictly enforced." In connection with this mention was made of the many recent alarms in the town owing to the setting fire to gorse fences, and the danger to buildings that had been incurred in at least two instances.—lt was decided to give Messrs J, Mundell and M. Connolly notice to remove at once the panels of fencing. erected for the purpose of trying mares, and to cease the practice of serving mares in exposed parts of the town. RENTS OP RESERVES. The rent roll having been carefully looked over the clerk was instructed to take legal steps to have the snnae reduced by the next meeting of the board, irrespective of persons. In one or two instances the board decided to cancel the lease and take over the reserve if the rent was not paid forthwith. INTERVIEW. Mr W. Fly waited on the board with regard to the water blocking at a culvert and overflowing his garden.— It was decided that the chairman nnd overseer should visit the spot the following morning. COMMITTEES. Messrs "Williams, Sherratt, and Hammond were appointed a works committee, and Messrs Dunlop, Maslin, and Mundell a finance committee, the chairman being a member of each committee ex officio. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £24 13s 6d were passed for payment and the board resolved itself into a BOAKD OF HEALTH. A complaint was received of fine ratepayer having no water closet, and it was unanimously decided that the Inspector of JN uisances should visit the premises the following day and report at the next meeting. If nightsoil was being deposited to take steps to stop 1 the same at once.
