RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
Geraldine—Tuesday, Sept. 3®, 1890. [Before C. A. Wray, Esq., R.M., and H. W. Moere, Esq., J.P.] ITEE RAISING,
Henry Gore, a lad 13 years of age, was charged with setting fire to a stack of straw belonging to James Rennie, on Saturday evening. Sept. 21st. ; Atcused admitted the offence.
Constable Willoughby gave evidenee as to arresting the boy, who confessed to setting fire to the stack. He had lit one or two small fires in the same locality previous to setting fire to the stack. He appeared to be a clever hey, having passed the sixth standard ; at school before he was 12 years old, His father was suffering from rheumatic gout and was not able to look after him, and the accused seemed to be quite beyond his control, sometimes running away and staying away for two or three days and nights together. J. D. Gore, the father of accused, gave evidence as to the boy being beyond his control. He had done well at school, and up to about six months ago had been a good hoy at home, but was now completely beyond the control of witness, owing to his being crippled with rheumatic gout, • The Bench, after hearing the evidence, asked accused if he had anything tip say to the charge, and he replied “ Ho.”
/ He was ordered to be sent' to the Burnham Industrial School till he was 15 years of age, and to be brought lip in tie faith of the Church of England. The: Bench gave accused a severe lecture and advised him to behave himself while at Burnham. He would there be taught a trade, and if be took advantage of the opportunity thus given to him he would yet become a respectable member of society. This being all the business the court rose.
