TEMUKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The regular monthly meeting of the Temuka School Committee was held on Tuesday evening. Present—Messrs • W. Storey (chairman), E. Brown, W. Wills, W, G. Rutland, P. McCaskill and G. H. Mogridge. Mr Yelvin apologised for.non-attendance. - MINUTES. The minutes having been read Mr Wills drew attention to the resolution affecting Messrs Whitcombe and Tombs and moved that it be expunged. | Mr Mogridge objected, as Mr Wills had not been present at the meeting and was not, therefore, in a position to judge of the merits of the case as laid before the committee. A slight discussion ensued, when Mr McCaskill moved “ That the minutes as read be confirmed/’ Seconded by Mr Mogridge and carried. TESTIMONIAL, ITC. The secretary reported that a testimonial had been forwarded to Mr H. Cross M. A., the late second master, and that he had corresponded with the Government in relation to the Native children at the school. HEAD master’s REPORT. The head master’s report was as follows: I have the honoi to submit the following report for August: Boys, Girls. Total.
The pump recently erected works satisfactorily; it is desirable though to have a tub or some ench vessel under the spout, or else the mess will become a nuisance and tidy floors an impossibility,” It was resolved to obtain a trough for the pump. THE WHITCOMBE AND TOMBS DIFSTCUIiTX.
A circular was received from the Secretary of the Canterbury Typographical Association asking the committee to withdraw their support from Messrs Whitcombe and Tombs, until such time as the shareholders are prepared to extend to the unions the same privileges as they themselves enjoy. This circular had been virtually dealt with at the previous meeting, but Mr "Wills moved “ That the head master after the present stock is exhausted cease to supply books of any kind to pupils, but leave the onus on parents.”
]Vo seconder was found for the motion, which lapsed. Mr Wagstaff, stationer, Timaru, wrote suggesting that as Messrs Whitcombe and Tombs’ publications were shelved, the Caxton copy books should be taken up. He had a stock on hand for sale. —Letter received. KISCELLAJTEOUS. The chairman stated that be had had chairs mended and ordered new pegs and pointers.—His action was confirmed. It was decided to have the trees in the ground trimmed. On thesinbtien of Mr Wills it was decided to have a frame for a black board procured.
ATTENDANCE. The chairman stated that about thirty ■ had been served on irregular attendants and he was authorised to take further proceedings if necessary. VISITORS. Messrs Storey and McCaskill were appointed visitors for the month. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £2 18s were passed for payment and the meeting terminated.
