GERALDINE SPRING MEETING. Stewards—Messrs A. M. Clark, R. H. Fearpoint, W, Deßenzy, B. R. Macdonald, M, Connolly, J. Mundell, R. Taylor, F. W. Worner, T. Markham, A. E. Cox, J; Farrell, "add A. White. Judge—Mr T. TescheClerk of the Scales—Mr B. B. Pearpoiut. ; Clerk of the Course— Mr A. L. Barker. Starter—Mr J. Meikie. Handicapper—Mr G. Dowse. Treasurer—Mr J. Mundell. Secretary—Mr F. Wilson Smith, V ' FIRST DAY. Tkis meeting commenced at the dab’s course, Orari, on Tuesday. During the last few years this 1 club has been very unfortunate in the matter of weather, most of its fixtures having been considerably, marred by wet weather. ' On Tuesday morning, however, the weather was simply 1 perfect, and as a consequence the attendance was larger than it has been j for some time past. A cold breeze sprang up in the afternoon which made things'unpleasant. Thanks to the ability and courtesy of the secretary, Mr F. ‘Wilson Smith, and the assiduous labors of the stewards; everything was kept running smoothly during the day. Mr J. Meikie filled his usual position as starter, and though the fields were in most of the races fairly large, and in some instances the horses untractable, he succeeded in getting them away on even terms. In the Selling Bace, however, he I found it necessary to fine the riders of Doubtful, Inez, and Lady Darling, and in the Flying Handicap the rider rider of Jack, £1 each for misbehavior at the post. No doubt untractable horses are exasperating, but jockeys should remember that under no circumstances are they justified in disobeying the orders of the starter. The •handicapping of Mr GK Dowse appeared to give general satisfaction, as out of 45 horses appearing on the card only 5 were scratched during the day, a fact which in itself speaks volumes. The public found it difficult in most instances to “spot the winner.” Mr Teschemaker found no difficulty in discharging his duties as i judge. Messrs Mason and Roberts I had one of their machines on the ground, and put through £llll. While speaking of the arrangements we again call attention to the great necessity that exists for extending the telegraph wire to the course. At every meeting complaints are made on all sides of the inconvenience to both the press and public of having to go about half a mile to reach the telegraph office. The extension of the wire would do a great deal to fopularise the meeting. Mr J. 'arrell bad the grand-stand booth, and Mr P. Byne booth No. 3. The refreshment table was catered for by Mr L. Tombs, of Temuka. The racing was upon the whole fairly good. The win by Messrs Hobbs Bros’. College Boy of the Spring Hurdles was a popular one, the way in which he stalled off the final rush of the favorite Romulus being much admired. Jacob Faithful, an essentially local hprsp, a eon of Trump Card’s, owned and brpd by Ity r p. McSlfane, created a boil-oyer by winning the District Stakes, the aristocratic Arbiter who went opt a warn* favorite making a gorry display, owing, probably, to the amount of temper he was showing. Prime Warden was made a [ hot favorite for the Cup, and fully justified the confidence reposed in him. The final rush with which he won the Cup was a treat to witness This horse, by the way, is a full brother of Sultan, the winner of the Dunedin Cup, and was bred by Mr Cates, of Tinwald. His performance on Tuesday in his maiden gallop proves him be a goer of no mean order, and he seems destined to add still further honor to the name his family have secured. After her performance at the Canterbury Trotting

Club's Spring Meeting on Saturday Oalista was made a hot favorite for the Three Mile Trot, and won it with ridiculous easel Tip to Saturday last this mare was a maiden trotter. On Saturday, however, she" reduced the New Zealand record’ for a Two, ..Mil* Trot by lOsecs, covering the distance in smim 22aecs. which will how stand as the New Zealand record. Dragon’s performance in the Mile Selling showed him to be possessed of foot. When submitted to auction he speedily ran up to £4l, at whicfi sprier he was bought by Mr M. Sherwin, After his performance in the Cup Bay J£ing was well backed for the shorter distance of the Flying Handicap, and proved the confidence placed in him to be well founded, winning a good race by a couple of lengths. - Spring Hurdle Handicap, of 40 aove. ; 5 sovs. from the stakes to 'ge to • the -second horse.- ' IJ inPes;-;''Over six flights of bardies. . -'i; r 34.
