SOCIAL. —A social in connection with the Lidies’ Guild of the Wesleyan Church will be held in the Social Hall (old Wesleyan Church), Temuk'*., this evening:. Mr Glover ax Geraldine.— Mr T. W. Glover will deliver «n under the auspices of the New Zealand Alliance, in I he Oddfellows’ Hall, Geraldine, to-morrow evening.

Alleged Murder. —JFunoke wa« brought up at the Police Court at Dargaville on Tuesday, charged with the murder of Constable McLeod. He was committed for trial. Alleged Cruelty.— At the Dunedin City Police Court Mrs Susan Dreaver was charged with improperly beating her child with a hoe, but an the child was to ill to appear she was r manded until Monday on small bail.

Property Sale.— “ The Corner’’ property, in Timaru, opposite the Club Hotel, has just been sold by the executors of the late Mr D. Clarkson for £5500 to Mr B. HallensteitV, of Dunedin. The property is held to be the best in Timaru.

Dunedin Hospital.—An inquiry is to be held into the state of the Dunedin Hospital, Dr Batchelor having alleged that the death of a woman who died iq the iostilution recently was caused by the unsanita'y state of the building. The Mails. —The Mariposa, with the English mails of 12th Ju'y, left San Francisco for Auckland on 26th July, contract date. The Zsaiandia, with the Colonial mails of 14th July, arrived ai Sao Francisco from Auckland on 2nd of August, contract date, K.M.S. Doric left Capetown for Wellington, via Hobart, on Saturday. R.M. Court, Geraldine.—At the coo* elusion of the business at this Court yesterday the Resident Magistrate intimated that the Court would in future be held on Tuesday instead of Wednesday, The change had been made in order to work in with the time-table, as there was no train to Timaru ou Wednesday evening, and persons from Timaru having business at the Court, who could not get away in time to catch the express train, were pat to a very great inconvenience.

Political Meeting.— A political meeting was held in Wellington last Monday evening, at which Sir George Grey, Mr Seddon, Mr Fish, Mr Moss, and Mr Fisher delivered speeches. They all dwelt on the anomaly of ctrrying on the Government and ’making laws when twenty members were sitting illegally now in Parliament, they hawing no constituents to represent. Resolutions were, passed affirming the desirability of an immediate dissolution, and tendering thanks to the Liberal members who are endeavoring to secure the rights of the people.

Floobs in Marlborough.— lt is reported that the fliod has been most disastrous at Mahikapaw«. Thousands of feet of flurhiog were washed away and .the .cla'ins are nearly ad filled up with tailings. In some cases several month-'’ work has been undone. Cullensville was at one time in considerable danger. In Pelorous diatric', several houses were flooded out, and the inmates bad to take refuge with their neighbours. FOOTBBAIL-— A match betweeo[the Timaru and Temuka Football Clubs will be played -it Timaru to-day.—The Christchurch Rugby Union suggest the fol owing dat-s for their matches :—Timaru, September 11th; Dunedin, September 13th. The union have decided to disallow the score of a team in Southland playing 16 men a side. —On Monday a football match was played between teams representing the Temuka District High and Catholic Schools, and resulted in a win for the former by 4 points, 1 goal 1 try to I try. Slack got both tries for hii side, and P. McOaskill converted one, while T. Spillane scored for the losers. G. Morion, full back, played splendidly for the winners, and repeatedly gained the applause of the spectators by his cool play. Slack, McOaskill, and A. Storey also played well. For the losers Spillane, Qaffaney, Brosnahan, Horrigan, and Quinn were most conspicuous, Messrs Anderson and Goldstone, assisted by the players and their schoolmates, were umpires, and Mr D. McOaskill wa* referee. A. correspondent writes pointing out that “a neat goal was potted by Spillane jus* after the half-time whistle, which was disallowed by the referee. However, as the ball was not ‘ dead/ according to the Rugby Union rules, it counted a goftl. The whistle cannot be blown until the bail is dead, therefore the game was a draw."
