HOCJ3E OF BEPRE3ENTATIVES. On Tuesday, BEDUCTION OF THE ESTIMATES.
Mr Monk gaye notice to move m Committee of Supply tbat the first item on the estimates be reduced by £l, as an indication that the Government reduce them by £50,000.
Mr Smith gave notice to move as an addition, that such reduction should not apply.."to the Post and Telegraph Department, or to any salaries of officers below £2OO. Mr Mitchelson said that be had intended to move for a to enquire ipto the charges made against the Government by the member for Waitotara,' in connection with the Bank of Mew Zealand, but he would take the opportunity of doing so tomorrow if the House would allow him to move the motion without notice. Mr Guinness asked the Government whether it was correct that the Government had promised a section of the House that they would reduce their estimates by £50",000.. Mr Mitchelson asked the hon. gentleman to give notice of his question. Mr Guinness refused to give notice, and moved the adjournment of the House to enable the matter to be debated. His opinion was that the financial debate should not be proceeded with till the House knew whether or not the Government intended to make this reduction. Mr Samuel, Sir George Grey, Mr W. P. Reeves, Dr Fitchett, Mr Seddon, and several others sp'oke in contemptuous terms of the ©overnment in allowing themselves to change the policy to please any section of the House.
Sir George Grey moved the adjournment of the House until a reply was received, but it was lost, and the debate on the
FINANCIAL STATEMENT was taken up by Mr Saunders, who expressed great dissatisfaction with the Government.
Mr Moss also expressed an opinion that an immediate change in the Government was absolutely necessary.
Captain Russell defended the Go vernment,and denied thatpeople were driven away from the shores of New Zealand. I£ the Government wer© defeated at the elections they would resign at once, The debate was adjourned, on the motion of Dr Fitchett, at 11.15,
