BISHOP JULIUS.
An occasional Canterbury correspondent to the Tablet has the following on Bishop Julius : —I went to hear Bishop Julius lecture in the Lichfieldstreet hail the other night. His subject was'"Three Tears in an English Village." lam quite certain that no person who went to hear the lecture could possibly have anticipated before entering the hall that the' Bishop would evolve from his somewhat circumscribed theme the racy, brilliant, witty discourse which he did. I never heard anyone to equal Bishop Julius as a lecturer except Charles Clarke. From the moment that he stepped out upon the platform and commenced what he termed his " talk " until his closing sentences, be kept the large audience laughing and interested. In describing the interior of the village church, he referred to quarrels between the secular clergy and the monks five or six hundred years ago. " Some people," he said, " imagined that the monasteries were the seats of iniquity." In a generous and eloquent manner he combatted this view. " The monasteries," he said, " were the homes of learning and of mercy, where all that was noble was fostered, and the poor of the whole country around were fed and cared for." AgaiD, in speaking of religious Sisterhoods, he paid a splendid tribute to those ladies who devoted themselves to God and to works of charity. "From these and many other remarks which he made in the course of his lecture I came to the conclusion that Bishop Julius is a man cf broad views, and who is large-minded enough to recognise that which is good and true wherever he finds it.
