SOCIAL GATHERING, TEMUKA.
A social gathering in connection with St. Saviour’s Church was held in the Volunteer Hall, Temuka, on Thursday evening. There was a very fair attendance at the tea, which was on the table shortly after six o’clock. In all four tables were provided, and the donors simply loaded them with the choicest eatables. They were presided over by Mrs Ashwell and Miss Green, assisted by the Misses Wareing (2), Mrs Hayhurst and Miss Lee, assisted by Miss Nelly Eowe, Mesdames Thompson and G. Smith, assisted the Misses Simpkins and Bryan, and Mesdames Timson and Tombs, assisted by Miss Ada. Timson. After tea the Rev. T. A. Hamilton announced that a short programme of instrumental and vocal music, etc., had been provided, and the tables were speedily cleared away and seats arranged. The programme commenced with a pianoforte duet by the Misses Wills on Scotch airs. This was creditably performed. An instrumental trio followed, in which Mrs Poster (piano), Mr J. Andrews (clarionet), and Mr B. Pearse (yoilin), took part. The selection was a lively hornpipe, and the well known proficiency of the performers ensured its receiving a favorable reception. Mr W. N. Oathr© briefly sketched the story of Enoch Arden, from l ennyaon’s poems, and recited with much feeling the portion referring to Enoch’s return to his former home, The recital was listened to with much interest, and applauded. The Rev. T. A, Hamilton sang with vigor and expression “The Man o* War,” receiving hearty applause. Mesdames Poster and Herbert then played a pianoforte duet “ The Canary Bird,” a selection that was warmly received. Miss Ellen Pilbrow with considerable expression sang a song entitled “ Who can tell,” after which Miss Henderson recited “ The Charge of the Light Brigade.” An instrumental duet by Mrs Poster (piano), and Mr Pearse (violin), was capitally rendered, the piece selected being a fantasia on “ The Blue Bells of Scotland.” It received an encore, which, however, was not responded to. Mr Whitehead sang with good effect “ The Sea is England’s Glory,” which was followed by the duet “ All’s Well,” by Mrs Poster and the Rev. T. A. Hamilton. Mr Dudley Opie recited “ How the ‘lpttle Content’ beat the Spanish Armada," with force and expression, receiving hearty applause. Mr Chalmers danced the “Jack Tar Hornpipe,” to music supplied by Miss Fenton. His dancing was capital and was recalled.. The programme concluded with the song “In Days of Old,’’ admirably sung by the Rev. T. A. Hamilton. A charade acted by the Masters Lee (2), Morris (2), Radford, Fenton, and Wills, followed. 'lbis was in tfyrep apts, and was a lively, weff written piece. The. young performers in their respective parts displayed considerable ability, but the excitement pf appearing, before the public proved too much for thepj, and they completely lost control of therm selves. The audience, however, gathered sufficient of the dialogue to guess the wopd acted, which was “ Reckless.
