Sale op Fobs, etc. —Messrs J, Mundell a .id Go. hold an extensive sale of furs, clothing, etc,, at Geraldine to-day. Theatrical. —Mr J. L. Toole is to play through. New Zealand for eight weeks, commencing on the 99th of September next.
Sportin®, —The dispute between Canterbury sportsmen and the Otago handicapper is coming to a crisis. Mr Q, G. Stead has been warned by Mr Sydney James that unless .Mr Stead withdraws unreservedly all eharges against Mr Dowse tinlatter will take proceedings against him.
Land Sale.— lt was advertised that lots for the recent land applications in the Geraldine district would be drawn last Thursday. We have close'y examined the Christchurch papers, and find no refereocs to the matter in them.
Important Sale.—A ttention is directed to the pa> ticulars advertised by Messrs J. Mundell and Co. of the clearing sale of live and dead farm stock on account of Mr John Bmsnah*n, at Levels Plains, on Wednesday nox*. The sale is well worth the attention of farrai-rs and others. Death op a Stationmastee, The flags were half-masted last Thursday in Lyttelton and Christchurch on account of the death of Mr Thomas Braril-y, railway staiionmaster at Lyttelton for sixteen years. He arrived in the Sir George Seymour, one of the first four ships, and was widely rr spooled. Gas Explosion.— ln We'lington last Wednesday two officers of the Nation 1 Bank entered the strong room, and lighting a match, a terrible gas explosion took place, The heavy double outer door, CO feet aw-'y, and all the windows were shattered to pieces, and sent in fragment across the street. One of. the men was knocked down, and the other severely burned. The damage done to the Bmk is £IOO. A Sad (Use. —The body found in Caroline Bay h is been identified as that of G-orge Pri»st grain buyer, Timaru. His is a very sad bass. He recently returned to Titn.<rn, paid a'l his old debts, and started grain buying. Apparently, however, he was not 'uccessful, as it is alleged bo was in great financial difficulties, and suicide is suspected. He left homo last Tuesday week, and had not been heard of until his body was found. Fire. —The Railway Hotel at Wyndhain (Southland), occupied by John Monaghan, was burned down at 3 o’clock on Thursday morning. Very little was saved, the inmates escap : ng with scant clothing. The building was insured for £556, and 'stock and furniture for £250, both in the New Z-aland office, with reinsurances in the North German and Colonial amounting to £525. Thee .use of the fire was a defective chimney. Football. —The team selected to represent Temuka in the ma‘ch at Christchurch against Cambridge left by the express last night, and consisted of the following pi Mya's : —Messrs G. Valvio, R. Deferred Payment, —ln Invercargill a deferred payment settler purchased bind at £5 »n acre, After he had paid 32’ an acre for it be bad to forfeit it throngh inability to pay. Coder the Act of Dai session the land was r valued at 30’ per acre, or 2s leas than the man had paid for it. The man applied for the Imd on the ground that he had already paid for it. The board discussed the matter at great length, and finely referred it to the Minister of Lands.
Primitive Methodist Church, Pb ucdka —Mrs P. W. Jones, assisted by the Rev. G. Clement, will commence a week’s evang-listio services in the Primitive Methodist Church, Temuka, to-morrow afternoon. Mrs Jones has h n conducting ra asion services in the P/iimtivo Methodist Church, Geraldine, uo to and including last night, there being good congregations each evening, despite the exceedingly disagreeable weather. Mrs Jones concludes her mission at Geraldine to-njorrpw, when she will preach at 11 o’clock a.m.
Extraordinary Conduct.—Pome excitement was caused at Mosgiel last Wednesday night by Mm conduct of a nun named John Allan, who after causing the landlord of the Railway Hotel considerable annoyance, fired a gun just outside the doo r . A constable hearing the report, hurried to the spot, and when Allan brought the gun to his shoulder the constable pushed it aside and closed with him. A strogg'e ensued un'il assistance came. lap w,s then disarmed. His demeanor and actions in pouij. on Thursday were so peculiar that he was remanded for medical examination.
