TEMUKA TOWN BOARD.
The monthly meeting of this board was held last night. Present—Messrs J. Blyth (chairman), 8. Clinch, G. J Mason, and A. R Allan. CORRESPONDENCE. After routine business, correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: Prom the Property Tax Department enclosing form to be filled up to enable the board to receive subsidy due under the Local Bodies Pinance and Powers Act. Prom the Audit Department enclosing certified copy of balance sheet. From the Geraldine County Council covering memorandum of special order delegating to the board the power to collect harbor rate for the year. —The board at a previous meeting had signified its consent to collect same. Prom the Treasury Department stating that a claim for fees for quarter ending March 31st 1890, had been certified to.
From Mr Arthur Gabites requesting that the name of Sir William Blunden, Bart., might be placed on the roll in respect of sections 312, 313, 314, 333, 334, and 335, the same being in his occupation. —Sir William Blunden having signified his consent the exchange was ordered to be made.
Prom the Canterbury Trades and Labor Council requesting that the board in accepting tenders would carefully consider whether the amount of tender would allow the tenderer to pay fair wages to his workmen. ME PEANKS's APPLICATION.
A letter was received from Mr Franks in reference to his application for,the lease of a portion of the nightsoil reserve. He now applied to lease a portion of the reserve at a yearly rental of 20s, and he would transfer to the board any equal portion of the land now leased by him from Mr Davis, If this permission were not granted he would have to abandon his project of starting a useful industry—The matter was discussed briefly, the board being of opinion that they could not grant a lease, but would be willing to allow him to occupy a portion of the land and utilize the nightsoil, provided always that no nuisance was created. In the event of any difficulty arising the permission to be at once rescinded, and any plant to be removed on receipt of a month’s notice. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Mason, seconded by Mr Allan—- “ That Mr Franks be given permission to work on a part of the nightsoil reserve, 2 chains by 1 chain, asked for by him in letter J une 23 ; such right to be terminable at a month’s notice; any treating re nightsoil to be made with the nightsoil contractor.” THE EIRE BRIGADE. The chairman said that the captain of the fire brigade had requested permission to have the use of the office for a meeting of the brigade on (Saturday evening next. The clerk was instructed to write to Captain Henry conveying the board’s permission for the brigade to occupy the board-room, as requested. It was decided to ask the brigade to report on the water-supply, and the board would arrange to bp present at the meeting on Saturday evening to talk the matter over. TENDERS. The following tenders were received for contract No. 34, carting shingle: T. Davis, Is (Jd per yard j {?. Mplyahill, Is B|d j C. Bateman, Is 3d; H. Elkis, Is” Id; W. Hopkinson, lid; P, O’Mara, 9fd (accepted). APPLICATION. Mr Tangney applied for permission to erect a horse post in front of his premises. The application was granted, BATES. It was decided to sue for outstanding rates, and 12 persons were drawn for from a list submitted, the same to be sued without further notice. overseer's report. The overseer’s report was read and dealt with. Two or three more days would complete the work. He had spoken to Mr McGuire, the licensee of the Temuka Hotel, in reference to the discharge of fluid from a pipe leading from his premises into, the Vine-street afe fed piade an examination of tfe premises. He found that tfe cjrain pjpe started under the pump, and v\ as assured that nothing but water from tfe puppp, or rain water, wqs allowed to few into it. A piepe of perforated iron was placed oyey tfe pntrappe tp, the pipe, and prevented anything solid fetering it. At bis suggestion Mr McGuire commenced to lay small pipes in Ihe drain carrying off water from the roof of the hotel, etc, to the Vine-street drain, but bad desisted as he said he could get no allowance for improvements. He (the overseer) suggested that the board should insist Pb P e T* tain alterations being made on the premises belonging to Mrs Maude
Thompson adjoining the hotel. He drew attention to the marked benefit the timber-work placed ac the entrance of culverts on Bailway Terrace had been, and suggested that similar work should be placed at the entrance of culverts at the corner of Commerce Street and Railway Terrace (adjoining Mr E. Brown’s premises), and at the corner of Wilmhurst Road and Birkett Street. Sundry complaints had been made to him regarding the danger to foot passengers on dark nights on the footpath between shops occupied by Mr Money and Mies Donohue. It required a fence on the west side. The rate roll for the current year had been completed, and was now ready for the board’s inspection ,and initialling where alterations had to be made the overseer was instructed to give the licensee of the Temuka Hotel notice to have the drain leading from his preraises to Vine Street piped. He was also requested to give the owner of the Star Hotel notice regarding a nuisance alleged to exist on bis premises. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £33 lls 6d were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated,
