GERALDINE TOWN BOARD.
V The monthly meeting of ’.this board -was held on Tuesday evening last. Present—Messrs W. Maslin (chairman), J. Williams, A, Sherratt, N. Dunlop, A. White, and J. Mundell. COEEESPONDENCE. (Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: — From the town ranger, enclosing his monthly report of cattle found wandering. From Mr J. Farrell, asking the board to pay half the cost of asphalting and kerbing the footpath at the southern frontage of the Crown Hotel. —lt was decided to do so. From Mr J. Fleming, asking to be allowed to turn the water into dead head on his section.—A discussion took place on the subject of allowing dead heads, and it wag decided to grant the application, subject to the charge of 5s per annum, a similar .. charge to be made for all dead heads. The balance-sheet of the beard duly audited and certified to as being correct was received from the AuditorGeneral. A -circular was received from the Trades and Labor Council, Christchurch, asking the board to see that in letting contracts the price was such as to allow of the contractor paying v ■ ■ his men a fair rate of wages.— Beceiyed. , The Geraldine County Council wrote stating that in exercise of the powers vested in it under clause 157 of the County Councils Acts, 1886, ; that b&dy, by special order, wished to delegate to the various local bodies the power of collecting and recovering in their various districts the harbor . board.rate of id in the £, and offering a commission of 2| per cent, for doing the work ; such commission to include all costs and disbursements.—The board went thoroughly into the matter of the cost of doing the work, and found that they would be a substantial B um out of pocket by collecting the rate at the commission offered. They also looked up the clauses of the Act referred to. apd foupd that % pouncil copld, if the Jopal bodies were willing to accept such power as they proposed, provided they paid the cost of doing such work. The board, b<>wever decided not to accept the warp. The chairman was empowered to Bi gu the lease to Mr J. Turner of certain of the board’s reserves, and to affix the seal thereto. The overseer stated that a good deal more shingle would be required the roads and footpaths than had been specified, apd it was deeded to It carted bj the present con-1
ractor at the schedule price, as per the specification. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £l9 lls 6d were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
