GERALDINE LITERARY AND DEBATING SOCIETY.
The fortnightly meeting of ttiis society was held in Ihe library of the Mechanics' Institute last Wednesday evening. Mr H. W. Moore, vice-president, being in the chair. There was a good attendance, including several ladies. Oo tho proposition of Mr Aitkeo, seconded by Mi Misses Gardne r , Pearson, and Fish (2) were elected members of the society. Mr Webster, who had given notice of a motion for that evening, beng absent, it was decided to allow him to bring his motion forward at the next meeting. Readings were given by Messrs Ferguson, Moore, Fish, and McQibbcn, and commenied on by those present. Mr Aitken gave notice of motion for the next meeting as follows ; f'That jn fijtpre t|)e president, or !d the absence of the president then one of the vice-presidents, shall sign the minutes and conduct the business part of tho society’s meetings, and that the el cted chairm m should conduct only that portion of the meeting devoted to literature or debating, and that it sha'l be the privilege of the chairman elected for any meeting to nominate •Js successor for next meeting, This, if carried, to be read in connection with rule J 6 of the society,” provi Jes that at each mee'ing a different chairman shall be e’ected hem among those present, *ho shall cnnduc the business of that meeting. This is with a view to give each member an opportunity of learning the duties of a chairman. Tha chairman stated that at next meeting short papers would be road by three marpbers of the society.
