TEMUKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
. A meeting ct the committee of the above school was held last Tuesday evening. Present— Messrs Storey (chairman), Mogridge, McOaskill, Eutland, Wills, Brown, and Velvin. The head master's repcrt was to the effect that the number on the rollwas: Boys, 195.4; girls, 178 6; total, 374. Average attendance: Boys, 148.9; girls, 138.7; total, 287.6. Highest attendance: Boys, 164 ; girls, 156 ; total, 320. The midwinter vacation usually took place about the Ist of July. He enclosed a list of pupils who were attending irregularly.—On the motion of Mr Wills, seconded by Mr Velvin, it was resolved that, the parents of the children mentioned in the head teacher's report be notified that unless they attend better in future proceedings will be taken against them.—The secretary reported that those who had previously received such notices had greatly improved in the regularity of their attendance.
! Accounts amounting to £5 5s were passed for payment. Mr McOaskill, as visitor for last month, reported that he had taken Mr Duncan, plumber, to the school with the view of having the leakage in the lavatory put in repair. Mr Duncan had told him that the work conld not be done effectively while it was being used by tbe children, and as the vacation was near at hand he concluded it would be best to let it stand over until then. He gave Mr Duncan instructions to carry out the work as soon as practicable. Tenders were received for the supply of fuel for the übo of the school, and that of Mr McCann was accepted. Mr McCaskill reported that there was no drinking-water available in the school, and it was resolved to a&k the board to supply two Douglass pumps for the use of the children. It was decided to close the school on the 27th of June, and reopen it on the 14th of July, for the midwinter holidays. A motion by Mr Eutland, and seconded by Mr Wills pro forma, that the holidays should consist of one week, was negatived. A discussion arose on the supply of books, and it was mentioned that a movement was on foot to adopt the same kind of school books throughout the colony. Arter some conversation it was decided to write to Mr Ehodes and to ask him to give his support to any -motion to that effect which might be brought before Parliament. The chairman reported that the preparations for the concert were in a forward state, and the final arrangements made. The meeting then terminated,
