COMPENSATION TO PUB. LICANS.
London, June 7. The Commissioner of Police was hooted at the llyde Pat;k meeting. The chairman read a letter from Cardinal Manning, saying that if. tho principle proposed by the Government, of compensating publicans, were adopted it would spread throughout the Empire, and injure the cause of temperance in the colonies. Sir Wilfred Lawson, Mr W, S. Caine, and Mr Burns were among the speakers, Mr Gustafson dilated on the failure .of compensation in Geelong. Resolutions against payment of compensation were carried unanimously at twelve platforms.
