POSTAL CONFERENCE.
A Postal Conference is at present sitting in Adelaide. The 9on. J. H, Gordon, who presided, said South Australia was agreeable to adopting the postal reductions and urged that New Zealand ought to assist her neighbors in it. A motion was carried to raise the limit of a money order to £2O, also “ That in any future mail contracts across the Pacific Ocean New Zealand should arrange for the other colonies paying similar poundage rates to New Zealand to those paid by the noncontracting colonies to the Suez route, each despatching country, or colony, paying all the charges to destination.” Mr O’Connor, of New South Wales, said the time had arrived for New Zealand to contract for herself. Much was said by the various speakers about the monopoly enjoyed by the company, and it was urged that the colonies were strong enough to take the matter into their own hands and should not be dictated to. The hope, however, was expressed that no such position would be forced upon them,
