LABOR DISPUTES.
Brussels, May 23. The conference of miners are unanimous in supporting the eight hours system. May 24. At the International Miners’ Conference all the European delegates and two-thirds of those from Great Britain approved of State legislation in determining 8 boars as a day’s labor. Sydney, May 25. The employes in the clothing trade have struck tor higher wages, and as the masters are resisting the demand it is feared that the demand may assume alarming proportions. 4 The wharf laborers have decided that the rules and regulations adopted at the recent conference shall come into force on the Ist July, The employers object to them, and it is considered probable that a difficulty will arise. The Railway Commissioners on Friday wrote to the executive of the Rail, way Employes’ Society expressing their willingness to receive a deputation from the society to discuss the matters in dispute. This practically amounts to “cave in” on the part of the Commissioners, Hitherto they objected to the society because the honorary members were not employes. The executive of the Railway Servants’ Society have written to the Mannwatu Railway Company stating that their employes complain of the insufficiency of the staff employed, and requesting them to remedy the matters complained of. The dispute between the men and Mr Freeman, owner of the colliery at Abbotsford, Otago, has been satisfactorily settled by small concessions on each side. The nun resume work this morning (IVsdnv), Nothing is settled yet regarding the strike at Shag Point. Five men against whom eviction orders were obtained left their houses quietly on Saturday, and the rest of the men are preparing to do likewise if judgment goes against them. The notice from the enginemen expired on Saturday night ; two of them having worked two days beyond at the request of the manager.
