A number of medical men waited on the mayor of Christchurch and urged the advisableness of again bringing the Contagious Disease Act into operation there. They asserted that its suspension had seriously affected the health and morality of the city. The Mayor promised to bring the matter before the city council. M r Carr, engineer, presented a further report to the Napier Harbour Board on the over-payment on acount of rubble. He had investigated affairs for several months past and estimated the over-payment during that period was £2040. The board refused to pass Messrs Blackand Allison’s account for the past month, and decided to take legal advice as to the possibility of recovering the overpayment. Mr William Rooney, bailiff at the Cromwell Court, has been missing since Saturday, and it is believed he fell into the Clutba river and was drowned. He was seen returning to Cromwell about 6.30 p.m. on Saturday, and half an hour later his horse arrived at his home without a rider. It is supposed Mr Rooney was thrown and stunned, and that while in a dazed condition he wandered into the river. The Auckland Railway Reform League have adopted a petition to Parliament, urging that the Government Railways Act, 1887, is most unsatisfactory, and that it be at once repealed, and that an unconditional trial be given of the stage system of railway adminstratfon on the whole or on a considerable portion of the railways of New Zealand. The petition is te be circulated throughout the colony for signature.
