' The Elinor Vernon, which has arrived at Auckland reports that when off East Cape in a gale on Monday morning, Charles Pahl, the boatswain, fell off the jibboom and was drowned. The s.s. Southern Cross which arrived at Wellington from Napier, reports coming into collision with the Kawatiri while at anchor of Castlepoint on Sunday afternoon. The weather was very heavy at the time, and a strong south-westerley gale was blowing. The Southern Cross was the first to drop anchor, and the Kawatiri anchored close to her. Shortly afterwards during a severe gust, the two vessels swung on their anchors, and came into collision. The Southern Cross had three large dents on the port bow, one of the plates being stove in, about three feet below the top rail which is completely shattered. The s.s. Kawatiri arrived at Westport aud reports encountering fearlul weather after leaving Napier. She anchored under Castlepoint in company with the Southern Cross. The Cross drifted and came down on the Kawatiri, striking her amidships* carrying away some of her railing and putting a hole in a plate above water mark. The collision was not heavy. When the hands were mustered an extra man was found on board, who proved to be the chief steward of the Southern Cross- He had jumped when the vessel struck. The Kawatiri stood by and found the Cross safely anchored next morning, but did not speak to her. An inquiry into the collision is being held.
