TEMUKA CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.

The first “ Ingleside ” of the second season of the Temuka Caledonian Society took place on Thursday evening in the large drillshed, Temuka, and was a pronounced success. The hall was tastefully decorated by Messrs Mogridge, Lawaon, Allen, Newbury, and Quinn, assisted by Mr Ben, The walls were relieved with evergreens, etc., and from the roof were displayed the handsome banners of the society. The floor was in good order, and a liberal allowance of colored lanterns served to afford an agreeable and not too brilliant light. Ihe attendance was large, many of the visitors having come a considerable distance. Among these may be noticed Mrs and Miss Cox, and Mr A* 13- Q. Rhodes, M.H.R., the gqesta of the president, Mr A. M, Cjark. The official programme for the evening was divided into two parts, the first consisting of dance and song alternately, and the

second of dancing only. For the nondancers were provided cards, draughts, etc., and there were many who preferred to avail themselves of this mode of whiling a way the time. Not the least enjoyable part of these gatherings is the opportunity afforded for pleasant social intercourse, and many who under other circumstances would have few such opportunities must welcome the advent : of the Society’s social meetings, if for no other reason than the renewing of old and the cultivation of new acquaintances. The ball is, unfortunately, not well adapted for vocalisation, but the audience had no reason to complain of the manner in which Miss McLeod and Miss F, Guy sang their’ respective songs. The former selected “ Eobin Adair,” and the latter “Bothesay Bay,” a very pretty and tuneful ballad, Mr Higgins afforded much amusement by the inimitable manner in which he sang a very comical song “ I did it.” Mr J, McOaskill sang Pinsuti’s “ Queen of the Earth,” which has only once been given here before. His powerful voice overcame any acoustic difficulties that the building presented. Mr Gaze contributed an amusing reading. The interval between the first and second parts of the programme was agreeably filled by the discussion of excellent refreshments dispensed by Mesdames Allen, Mogridge, and Gaze, The society are indebted to Messrs Clark, Murray, and Alleu for their substantial contributions to the commissiariat department. Prior to the commencement of the last danee the president, Mr A. M. Clark, in a brief speech thanked those present for their attendance, which evinced their interest in the proceedings of the society. He announced that it was the intention of the society to hold several gatherings of a similar nature and als® a ball, and he trusted that all would be similarly successful. He expressed his appreciation of the good feeling evinced towards him in his re-election to the president’s chair, and although it was an honor which he would gladly have resigned in favor of a more meritorious individual he hoped that he would be able to fill it to their satisfaction. The president’s speech was loudly applauded, and it was a generally expressed conviction that it would be a difficult matter to find a suitable successor. The gathering dispersed in the small hours, everyone apparently in the best of humors. In addition to those previously mentioned, the services of Messrs Henry, A. W. Mann, J. Naughtou, and P. McOaskill are worthy of recognition, and Mr Lawson’s indefatigable attention to his several offices of doorkeeper, steward, &c., were most meritorious. The music, which was excellent, was supplied by Messrs Goodwillie and Levens, who have at previous gatherings earned a well merited reputation. Mr A. Bissett was a most efficient M.C, The future socials of the society will doubtless be looked forward to with keen anticipations of pleasure.
