GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.
The monthly meeting of this board was held yesterday. Present—Messrs E. E. EJatman (chairman), A. Metcalf, J. Kelland, and K, Brophy, the newlyelected member. An apology for non-attendance was received from Mr DeEenzy. ELECTION OE CHAIRMAN, ' ' " This being the first meeting since the annual meeting of ratepayers and the return of Messrs Kelland and Metcalf (who had retired by rotation as required by the Act) the election a of a chairman for the ensuing year J took place. Mr W. Shiers, the clerk, took the chair in the meantime, and on the motion of Mr Kelland, seconded by Mr Brophy, Mr Elatman was reelected chairman.
TENDEES. Tenders were opened and dealt with, as follows: Contract Ho. 308 [Repairs to Geraldine and Pleasant Valley road : B. Trumper, £23 ; M. Brophy, £l9 ; M. Lawler, £l6 15s; J. Fifield, £l6 (accepted). COEEESEONDEMCE. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows : From Mr J, Jackson, Timaru, enclosing prices for pipes and planking. Prom Mr P. Brown, Woodbury, making an offer to lease a plantation reserve.—After considerable discussion as to the advisability or otherwise of letting such reserves, it was decided to refuse the offer.
Prom Mr J. H. Sutter, requesting that the name of Mr John Crow be substituted for his upon the rate roll for a number of sections, he haying disposed of the same to Mr The latter having agreed to the application, it was granted. Prom Mr|A. H. Maclean, Inspector of Audit, Christchurch, with regard to auditing the board’s books. Prom Mr W. Shiers, [Returning Officer, forwarding the result of the late election. An application from Mr Da we for a road to his property, Fairfield, ordered to stand over from last meeting wa# again read, and it was decided to call tenders for the work.
Frora Mr €K Barney, asking for the name of Mr J. Campbell to be substituted on the rate roll for his.—Mr Campbell to consents J’rom Mr John Murray, pointing out that a heap of stones carted by the board would interfere with the contractors who were clearing the gorse from the front of sections i 9006 and 23967, and asking the board to remove the same.—Work done. was received from Mr C, M, Brown, Ashburton, re poisoned wheat for small birds.—The board have a stock on hand.
Erom Mr U. GK Tripp, enclosing a copy of the resolution passed by the Mount Peel Hoad Board re the Orari .traffic Bridge.—Consideration of the iptter was deferred till the afternoon.
, oteeseee’s eeboet. The overseer’s report was read and dealt with as follows “I have the honor to report for the information of the board as under The
work in hand has made fair progress during the past monlh. The new road at the Waibi Bush will be completed in two weeks from date. Mr Cochrane has been supplied with a timber culvert for his entrance from Rue’s road. The Orari Bfidge road, Woodbury, and one or two other roads have been repaired with broken metal and shingle. The Pleasant Valley road wants shingle repairs and formation attending to in places where the sides are much worn down. Coal—A new seam of coal has been opened out iu Beautiful Valley. I have sent up the day men to make the track passable to <he pit. Rood at Belfield—As directed I have drawn out an agreement for the purchase of a portion of Mr T. Sugrue’s section at Belfield Vil age Settlement, and submit the same for the board’s approval. Four chains of fencing will be required to fence the boundaries of Sugrue’s section. Mr Wigley has applied to have the boulders picked off from the sides of the Kakahu Valley road where the gorse has been cleared. Kakahu Bridge—As instructed I have prepared a plan fer a new bridge over the Kakahu main creek, and have ordered the ironwork. I have some difficulty io procuring suitable timber, but 1 think all will be ready for tenders at next meeting of the board. Horse Feed—The bats contracted for by Mr Burke have iboen delivered into store, Orari Vil'age Settlement—l should advise that one of the main streets in this settlement be formed so as to comply with the conditions under which the payments are made by the land board.—l am, etc,,j “W. Shiers, “Overseer.,’ It was decided to effect the repairs necessary on the Pleasant Valley road. The action of the overseer with regard to the track to the coal seam was approved. It was decided to do the work applied for by Mr Wigley when the_ gorse was cleared. It was also decided to call for tenders for a new bridge over the Kakahu river; tenders to be in by next meeting. The work suggested te be done at Orari Village Settlement to he done at a suitable time. INTERVIEW. Mr W. M. Howe attenned and asked the board to make a crossing to a piece of property he wished to crop. He also asked the board for some assistance clearing the manuka scrub from, the road in order to allow of his clearing his gorse.—The overseer was instructed to report on the work at next meeting. It was -also decided to request Mr Tagg to remove the fence erected by him across the road, .Mr B. Bay ley waited on the board with reference to removing his fence nearer to the creek.—Allowed subject to the overseer’s approval, THE GORSE QUESTION:. Mr A. Bates not having cut the gorse fenco on his land at the corner of the Woodbury road it was decided if the,work was not completed within ten days to take legal proceedings in the matter. ACCOUNTS, Accounts amounting to £99 I7s 3d were passed for payment and the meeting terminated.
