FOOTBALL.
TIMARU r. WAIHI, These old rivals met at Winchester on Saturday last for the first time this season, and, as usual, was witnessed the first-class game which always attends their meeting. The ball was kicked off at about 3.30 p. m ., when almost immediately, by smart ’following up, the Waihi forwards, headed by T. L. Hart, dribbled the leather over the Timaru line, and that player gained the first try , for his side. Owing to the wind, and the difficult angle, the attempt at goal was unsuccessful. After the kick out, the Waihi forwards, playing with splendid dash and combination, kept'Timaru penned in their own quarters, notwithstanding that A. Perry, D. Thomas, and others made strenuous efforts to* relieve without scccess, however owing to the first-class collaring of Kalaugher and A. Shallard. Soon afterwards the latter ■ scoredV the second try for his side, up goaf resulting. In the second spell Timaru appeared to wake up, and, having the wind behind them, succeeded in making the play more even. The game at this stage, was < very fast, but neither side seemed to have any advantage. Yery shortly, however, Macintosh, by a good run, managed te carry the ball over the Waihi goal-line. The try was disputed on the ground that the
ball was held about two yards from the line, but was allowed. W. Perry took the kick, and succeeded in placing a splendid goal from a difficult angle, -< amidst applause, Ihe game now stood—Timaru, 1 goal (3 points); Waihi, 2 tries (2 points). No further score was added, although the game was still fast and interesting,- and c ' both goals were at times threatened, both teams making great efforts; Timaru to keep their lead and Waihi to increase their score, Timaru eventually winning as above. The match all through was played in a very friendly spirit. Eor the winners, W. Perry, Matheson, Maclean, Thomas, and A. C. Perry showed up most, and for the losers A. and P. Shellard, T. Hart, Kalaugher, and Stewart (2). Messrs Blake and Hiskens acted as umpires, and Mr Moore carried the referee’s whistle. Ihe visitors were afterwards entertained at a dinner and smoke; concert' at the Wolseley Hotel, and, after enjoying themselves thoroughly, left Timaru at about 8.30 p.m.
