STREET OBSTRUCTION.
TO THE EDITOE, Sib, —l have never written a letter to an editor before, but I am fast coming to the conclusion that Mias Ackerman was right when she said the men had no backbone, or else one of them would surely have called attention to the subject that heads this letter before now. On several occasions I have had to walk along the Mam Street in Temuka on a Sunday evening, and invariably see a large number of over-grown boys congregated in front of the Salvation Army Barracks, and to get past that building find it necessary to go out into the road. But this is not the worst of it, for the filthy language indulged in by some of these creatures is a disgrace to a civilised community. One would not much mind their criticising one’s dress and appearance if they would only do it in decent language, and then thejr nasty pipes are enough to make one sick. Now, sir, I should like to know why they are allowed to block the footpath Sunday after Sunday as they do. They would be a great deal better employed wheeling a perambulator with their younger brother in, or rocking the cradle while their parents go to a place of worship. But where are the police? I know there are some, because I read about them in the Leadee, but I never see them. Perhaps they do not live about th© quarter I apeak of. I have no doubt thpy are nearly killed with oyerworlr, as tliey are ip other places, but if tpey would take an extra strong cup of tea some Suuday afternoon it might nerve them for the desperate task of clearing the footpath, and so earn the thanks of yours, etc., Only a Womak.
