CHANGE IN THE ELECTORAL DISTRICT.

The following is a copy of the petition recently forwarded to the Representation Commissioners from settlers residing between the Eangitata and Orari rivers east of the railway line:— " We, the undersigned, residents in the portion of., the proposed electoral district of Ashburton which lies between the Rangitata and Orari rivers, b ing portions of the Temuka riding of the Q-eraldine county, desire to lodge an objection with the Representation Commission against the annexation of this portion of the Geraldine county to the proposed district of Ashburton. " We do bo on the ground that this area is properly attached to the proposed Geraldine district by ' community of interest, facilities of communication, and geographical features.' Our trade and business is almost exclusively with Timaru, and we are separated from the Ashburton county by the Rangitata river, which is for the most, part, except by railway, an impassable barrier. "Moreover, cases may arise, as they have arisen in the past, in which our interests are at variance with those of the county of which Christchurch is the trading and political centre. " We, therefore, pray your honorable Commission to rectify the boundaries of the Geraldine diatnot so as to inolude the area between the Orari and Rangitita rivers. " (Signed) W. Roltißston." To this the Hon. W. Rolleston has received the following reply: " Wellington, 26th April, 1890. " W. Rolleston, Esq., Ashburton. " Sib, —1 am requested by the Representation CoromUsioners to acknowledge the riceipt of a petition signed by yourself and ottier residents in the electorate of Ashburlon suggesting eertain alteratienß in the proposed boundaries of the district, and I am to inform you that tbe Commissioners have complied with the prayer of tiie petition.—l have, etc , " Chaibman." Messrs F. W. Badham and N. C. Nicholas circulated the petition, and were successful in procuring a large number of signatures t® it.
