TEMUKA FLORAL AND HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
The first annual raee'.ing of the members of the above society was held last night at The Hall (the old Wesleyan Church), Temuka. There was a larae attendance, the president, the Rev. T. A. Hamilton, presHing. The chairman, after a few introductory remarks, called upon the secretary, Mr E. C. Dann, to read the report and balance-sheet, which were to the following effect : BEPOBT AND BAIiAHOB SHEET. Mr President and Members of the Temuka Floral and Horticultural Sociffcy. Your oommittee feel that there is great cause for congratulation on the result of the first year's transactions. We have a membership of 106, two of whom, namely, Messrs A. B. Q- Rhodes and P, Wareing, are life members. There are a few members who have net paid their subscriptions, and they are requested to do so at an early data. At the show held on Jan. 23rd, 1890, the committee added a class for Ladies' Fancy Work and General Exhibits, which was a great success, and they think it would add to the popularity of the society if the exhibits in that class were largely increased. At a meeting held on Ma»-ch 28th the committee passed the following resolution "That it be a recommendation to the incoming committee that a show of spring flowers and vegetable be held on Nov. 9th, 1890, all entries to be for exhibition only, and that certificates of merit be o warded that it would be advisable to hold the main show at an earlier date, say Thursday, Jan. Btb, 1891 ; also that the society give a substantial prize for the best kept cottage garden." Tbe thanks of the society are due to the judges (especially the lady judge*) ; the ladies and gent'omen who gave speoial prizes in money and goods; also to the public for their attendance at the show, whioh enable us to start the new season with a substantial credit balance in the bank.
Messrs W. N. Oathra and H. T. Clinch were elected members of the committee during the past season, vice Messrs Flint and Velvin resigned. In conclusion the committee trust that their labors will lead to still greater interest being taken in the operations of the society, and that the coming season will be even more successful than that just concluded. The balance sheet showed that the total receipts for the year amouuted to £54 4s 21, made up as follows : Subscriptions, £26 7a • special prize moneys, £lO 8s 8d ; oagh tiken on show day, £ls 5s 6d ; entry fees, 19s ; and committee's subscription to lunch, £1 4s. The expenditure was as follows Priz* money given by the sooiety, £l4 2s 6d ; special prizes, £9 16s 2d j printing and adveitising, £8 lis 6d ; stationery, £1 12s 7d ; hire of building, £3 Is 6d ; luncheon, J 62 10s; bonus to seoretary, £3 3a; auditing, 20s; Caledonian Society, for hire of trestles, 10s; and miscellaneous, £1 lis, leaving a credit balance of £8 4s lid.
On the motion of Mr Cooper the report and balance-sheet were adopted as read, several members expressing their pleasure at ita satisfactory character. NEW MEMBERS. The following new members were elected :~Sir William Blunden, the Rev. Father Fauvel, Messrs A. W. Mann, E. Herbert, J. Talbot, and W. Storey. ELECTION OP OFFICERS. The election of officers for the ensuing year was then proceeded with, and resuifed as follows : Patrons, the Rev. T. A. Hamilton, and Messrs A. E G Rhodes, M.H.8., and J. T. M. H-iyburst; president, Mr E. Cuttenj vice-preßidents, Sir William Bluuden, the Rev. Father Fauvel, the Rev. J, Dickson, Messrs M. Quinn, J. Blyth, J. Talbot, and J. Guild ; treasurer, Mr E. (J. Dann ; secretary, Mr W. N. Cathro. For the committee eighteen nominations were received, and a ballot being taken the fol'owiog gentlemen were elected ;—Messis P. Wareing, F. Saunders, W. G, Rutland, J. Brown, A. W. Mann, H. Cliocb, G. Prattley, E. Brown, J. Bennett, E. Whitehead, G. Smith (Main Road), J. Hooper, and R. Metson. The President and Mr W. N. Cathro acted as scrutineers. The appointment of un auditor and the fixing of his remuneration was left to be dealt with by the committee.
SPECIAL PEIZEB. The secretary unoounced that Mr A. Perry had promised a Bpecial prize of one guine>i, and that Dr Hayes had given his prize money, 123 6d, won at the last show for a Bpecial prize to be awarded at the discretion of the committee. Further donations were promised by the Rev. T. A. Hamilton and Mrs Hamilton, and Messrs P. Wareinc H T Clinch, J. Brown, W. G. Rutland, and B. C. Dann. ' MISCELLANEOUS. | Several suggestions were made as to the arrangements for the next show, the speakers being of opinion that the rule relative to the non-removal of exhibits prior to ten o'clock should be rigidly enforced. VOTES OF THANKS. On the motion of Mr J Brown a very hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the Rev. T. k. Hamilton for the manner in which he had rilled the office of president. He had always been ieady to use his influence to further the interests of the socieiy, and had doae much to proi mote its success. The president haviug brii fly replied, Mr j Cooper moyed a hearty vote of thanks to ' the retiring officers, which was .carried unanimously. The meetiug then terminated.
