LABOR DISPUTES.
London, April 27. The strike of the Great Southern and Western Railway employes in Ireland, delays the transmission of the American mails. Mr Davitt advises the men tio moderate their demands, and b.. has consented to interview the directors of the company on their behalf. April 28 ’ The majority of the bootmakers on strike have resumed work, as the masters have agreed to provide workshops for men who have hitherto been employed under the sweating system. The directors of the Great Southern and Western Railway Company, of Ireland, are engaging blacklegs to fill this places of the men out on strike. It fc expected that traffic will be resumed. The signalmen who went ont on strikk are to be prosecuted by the directors for deserting their posts. The National Federation of Trades Council hare decided to adhere to their previous determination of holding h grand procession of various trades in Hyde Park on the Ist May, as they consider it would be a breach of faith with foreign workmen to abandon (he procession on the Ist for a damonstration on Sunday, the 4th May, Workmen in the provinces are apathetic in the matter.
April 29. The sailors oa Messrs Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s steamers have struck, demanding 48 hours as a week’s work while the steamers are in harbor. Much alarm is being felt in most European cities at the approaching labor demonstrations on Thursday. In Vienna the residents are placing their valuables in the custody of the banks. Berlin, April 27. The German Minister of Works intends to dismiss any Government employes who absent themselves from work in order to take part in the labor celebrations on May Ist. Large numbers of employers have decided that those workmen who are absent at the demonstration on the Ist May shall not be taken on until the 9tb, thus depriving them of a week’s work. Prince Bismarck condemned the repression of a holiday to Government employes on the occasion of the labor demonstration, He said that he was certain that the celebrations on the Ist May would pass without any disorder or trouble. Vienna, April 27. The Austrian Government have advised all municipal authorities to courtmartial all persona accused of riotous behaviour daring the labor celebrations on May Ist, and to shoot those who are found guilty, April 28. The workmen’s executive committee have issued a manifesto in which a request is made to the men to behave in an orderly manner during the labor celebrotions on the Ist May, and also to use their best endeavors to preserve order. New \ork, April 28. The difficulty with the Chicago carpenters is still unsettled, The masters are willing to concede the men’s demands regarding the boors and wages, but decline to recognise trades unions.
