The sitting of the Court of Appeal is fixed for the 28th iust. A number of French gendarmes arrived at Auckland on Thursday by the steamer Tekapo from Sydnev, en route from Marseilles to Tahiti, where they are to render military service. At a meeting of the Christchurch Operative Bootmakers’ Society on Thursday night it was resolved—- “ That this society accord their unanimous support and pledge themselves to shop only ip the hours dictated by the Early Closing Association.” The railway revenue returns for the 11 months to the Ist March show the receipts to have been £987,607 14s 7d, as compared with £908,699 6s 7d for the corresponding period of the previous year. The constable who brought the warrant from Woollara, deposed that the warrant was issued in March, 1887, but the prisoner had left the colony for America, siad his whereabouts had only just become known. McLeod’s solicitor applied for his release under the Fugitive Offenders Act, but the Resident Magistrate refused. Mr McLean then appealed to the Chief Justice, Mr Cotterill, for the Crown, opposing the application. The decision of the Resident Magistrate was upheld, and McLeod remains in gaolWilliam Pitt Brook was committed for trial at Christchurch on Wednesday on two informations. First, that he had embezzled a cheque for £29 8s 2d on the National Bank on July 12tb, 1889, a cheque for £25 IBs 8d on August 26th, and a cheque for £l6 2s 8d on September 12th. The second charge was embezzling a cheque for £l6 9s 3d on November 2nd, 1889, a cheque for £2O Os lOd on December 28th, 1889, and a cheque for £3l 3s 9d on February 28th, 1890, the moneys of the Saleyards Company, Mr WynnWilliams, solicitor for the company, deposed that Brook wrote asking for time, 7 days, to cable to his brother, General Brook who would pay the money taken. The company declined to compromise. Bail was allowed, accused £SOO and two sureties of £SOO.
