CHARGE OF ATTEMPTED MURDER.
At Ihursday’s sitting of the Dunedin City Police Court, Thomas Barrett was charged with having assaulted William Woods on the Pine Hill road on March Ist, with intent to murder him. The evidence went to show that bad feeling existed between the parties, and on Saturday, the Ist March, the prisoner met Woods on the Piue Hill road at 11 o’clock at night, and followed him for some distance, when he struck Woods several violent blow's over the head with a stick, and also struck the horse which Woods was driving, and deliberately backed the horse, cart, and man over the hank where there was a drop of 15ft or 20ft. The result was that the horse turned a complete somersault in the air and fell, breaking its back, which killed it, while the cart fell on the top of the man. The man was badly hurt, and is just out of the hospital. Accused reserved his defence, and was committed for trial. I Bail was allowed.
