ACCIDENTS, FATALITIES, ETC.
Fielding March 20, Yesterday while a coach containing o driver and was on its way to Birmingham, the brake gave way, and in endeavouring to keep the horses in a cutting the pole broke and the whole concern went oyer an embankment. The driver and two passengers were severely bruised, and the third named Fortune Gilmer, aged 72, was found underneath one of the houses. Ha was conveyed to a hotel close by, but died shortly afterwards from internal injuries and severe shock to the system. , Invercargill, March 19. Charles Freeman, 71, a settler of 27 years in this district, hung himself to-day. He was a remarkably wealthy and robust man. The cause seems to have been the contraction of his income. He was worth about £7,00©, and at one time had an income of £25 a week which bad fallen to £7. He leaves a widow, but no children. Dunedin, March 21. The o'othes of a mao wore found on the beach near Lawyer’s Head last eyening, and it is supposed to be a case of suicide. In the waistcoat pocket was found a slip of paper on which was the name “ David Elgin.” A pockethandkerchief was marked “ J, Murphy.” The marks of bare feet were traced to the sea, but as yet the body has not been found. Christchurch, March 29. A laboring man named John Wing attempted suicide at the Leeston Hotel yesterday by opening a vein in his arm with a sharp knife. He is in a very low state through loss of blood. He hud just knocked down ” his harvest cheque. 1 About midday yesterday a special train fan into a team of horses belonging to the School of Agriculture which was going over the crossing used by the College. One horse was killed and another lamed.
