Lawson. Hon Treasurer- A. White. Hon. Secretary—A. Fisher. The fourth annua! sports meeting of the above society was held in the Geraldine Domain yesterday, and proved a decided success. The day was observed as a close hoiday. The weather in the morning was beautifully fine, but too hot for comfort. About one o’clock a cold sou’-west wind ceme up, which made things very unploasan'. It moderated, however,by about 3 o’clock! The ground was very bard, owing to the long continued spell of dry weather, but not at all too bard for the cyclists who found it excellent going. The course had been well mown and thoroughly rolled, and was clearly marked off with flags. The straight was roped off on either side. The course was laid o ff the same as for lust year, the 100 yards’ course being just inside the straight of the ordinary course, This year the ring for wrestling throwing the hammer, was roped off, a great improvement on lasi year. The whom of the arrangements made by iho committee were very sa>isfactory. Each year the sports are hold some little improvement in the
arrangements is made, anil the plant of the committee added to, with the result tlie.i everything now works very smooth'y, Mr A. Fisher, the gecretary, was extremely courteous and (■bilging to all. and did his best during the day to make everything go off without a hitch, The Geraldine Brass Band, under Bmunaster T, Sherralt, was on the ground, and added grea iy to the enjoyment of the day. Mr J. Riordan h*d the refreshment booth, and appeared to do'a good trade, Mr H, W, Moore acted as starter and succeeded in each case in sanding his men away to an even st.-.r 1 , iho handicappers are to be congratulated upon the success which atlended their efforts, as the finishes were ■in every race exceptionally close. The attendance was good, a very large number of ladies being present. The following are the results Tossing the Caber First prize, £1 ; second, 10s. 11. Mappison (23ft 4in) ... tM 1 D. Robbs, Byds ... ... ... 3 This would have been a capital race but for accidents. Hobbs, who was leading well fell at the last hurdle. F. Shallard then took first place with A. Shallard very close. The two brothers rose to the hurdle together, and oue tripping the other they both fell. F. Close then wont to the Hunt, and F. Shallard picking himself up finished a good second. Time, linin 4 1 -sih secs. Vaulting with Pole, Handicap—First prize, £1 10s ; second, 15s. F. Macdonald, scr (Bft 9;ti) 1 S. Thornley, 10in (7ft lOin) ... ... 2 Won easily. Running Long Jump—First prize, £1; second, 10s. Brosnahan,(lßft Sin) 1 Sullivan (18ft 6in) 2 J. W. Radford and S. Thornley also competed. 100 Yards Handicap; 10h to winner of each heat—Fust prize, £2 ; second, £l. First Heat, R. AlcLeod, syda ... ... ... l J. W. Radford, Iyd ... ... ... 2 R. J. Many of the public were of opinion that Dyson had won, but the judges gave it to McLeod, 150 Yards Handlcap (for boys under f^) —First prize, 15j; second, 7s 6 i. F. Reeves, Gyds p J. Tangney, scr. 2 J. McLean, 12yds, H. Patrick, scr., M. Lawler, Byds, Tims. Tindall, 10yds, B. Orton, 7yd?,' E. Beat lie, syds, and J. Coi'gan, 12yds, also started. ‘This was a splendidiy contested race, the second boy just securing his place on the tape. 880yds Handicap First prza, £3 second, £1; third, 10 '. ’ W. Dawe, 25yds ... ... ... J. Scott, 15yds ... ... ... 2 F. Shallard, 15yds ... ... . 3 .Gb King scr. J. Bryan 10yds, and'B. T. Evans 15yds. also started. The men got away to a good start, but D uve ran as he liked and waa never caught. Bryan fell out at the second round. Shallard ran ■ very gamely for third place. Time, 2min. 10 2-3rd secs. ’ Wrsestling, Border aiyle— First prize £1 10s ; second, 15s, ' J. Hall, . ■, S. Thornly, ... g J. Sullivan and D. Angland also”coinpeted. Hall proved himself far too good a man for the odier competitor s. Maiden Wrestlug, Bordeer style First prize, £1 ; second, 10s. P. Lysaghc ... ... ... M. Angland ... ... ... .. 2 W. Hobbs and Coogan also competed. Punning High Jump—First prize, £1 10s ; second, 15s ’ S. Thornley, scr. (4ft 11 in) 1 J. Radford, 2.n (4ft Sin) 2 J. Sullivan also competed. Obstacle Race ; once round Iho track— Fust prize, £llos ; second, 10s, ’ U. Dawe ... ... _ T. B. Evans ... ... ... . . 2 These were the only sorters,' This race, as usual, was one of the most amusing, and at the same time trying evanis of the day. The competitors had first to wriggle through sacks pegged down tight to the ground, and then gat througn tlio post and rail fence. The next obstacle was three barrels suspended in the centre, a most difficult obstruction to negotiate. Very loose rope ladders had to be scaled, afler which two b irrela suspended on end from ropes dangling Horn the end of bhiegum poles tried the stamina of the competitors, after which the fence had again to bo negotiated. Tiia race terminated with a straight run for home. Bicycle Race ; 3 mi es (for amateurs) — Fust, trophy or cup, value £3; second, trophy or cup, value £1 10s. C. H. Hull (T.0.C.), scr. ... ... 1 E. Christian (T.T.U.C.), 150yds ... 2 A. Jonet, 250yds, did not start. Hall created Chritian with the lead for the Gist tew rounds, and then went up and pas-md him easily. Both men deserved their prizes, as a strong sou’-west wind was blowing during the time the race was ridden. 'Ume 12in : n 2 4 sth sec. This was a well contested race. Boer fell out in the second round and Ross in the third. A splendid race took place up the straight between Dawe and Evans for first honor?, Dawe seeming first place by about a foot. Time, 4min 43 4-sth sees.
