ACCIDENTS, FATALITIES, ETC.

Auckland, March 12. A settler named Leece, whilst engaged in extinguishing a fire which had caught a furze hedge bounding his estate, was rendered unconscious, and died in a few moments. It is considered that he was suffocated, or that he succumbed to heart disease. A child, aged two years and a-half, daughter of E. C. Eraser, died at Tauranga from the effects of poison—eating the heads of matches, An old Auckland resident, Samuel "Wellington, died suddenly yesterday of apoplexy at Warkworth, where he had gone to visit some friends. Deceased came to the colony about 1848, and was then m the 58th Regiment. Wellington, March 13. The body of a man about 33 years of age, apparently a labouring man, was found in the harbour this morning. A prayer book in one pocket bore the name " James Kerstans." Nothing is known about the deceased, and the body is unidentified. Dunedin, March 13.

William Auld, storekeeper, died from the result of an accident in returning from Tuapeka mouth. Alexander Pettiford, about seventyfour years of age, who was before the Court on Tuesday for drunkenness, died in the hospital, where he had been sent. Death resulted from enteritis and general weakness, apparently from chronic alcoholism.

Mrs Vickery, of St. Kilda, was burned about the hands and face by an 1 explosion of gunpowder. The case was supposed to be one of attempted suicide, but is now supposed to be an accident,
