AUCTIONEERS’ REPORT.
TIMABU. ; Messrs Qracie, Maclean and Co. ■report for the past fortnight ending .Saturday, as follows: — Horses—Business in horses of all sorts has been at a standstill point for some weekspast, owing to the fact of very few coming forward for sale. To-day we had numerous enquiries for young sound draughts, but unfortunately intending buyers were unable to get their wants supplied. The demand for light horses is limited! We quote medium to good draughts at from £l6 to £25, aged £8 to £l2, Hackneys—medium £8 to £lO 10s, light and weedy £4 to £6. ’ Sheep—Notwithstanding the long continuance of dry weather, and the scarcity of feed, the demand for all classes of sheep is brisk, and both at auction and privately a large number of lots have been disposed of at wellmaintained values. At Pleasant Point on the 3rd inst., the yards were well filled, and the sale from start to finish was the best we have had for some months. We yarded, on account of vaiious owners, and sold 2619, as followsl3l 2-tooth crossbreds at Us 2d, 168 merino ewes at 2s 6d, 94 do do at Is lid, 54 fat ewes at 9s 9d, 273 crossbred ewes at 6s 9d, 300 halfbred ewes at 6s 6d, 213 do do at6s6d. 87 cull ewes at 3s sd, 146 merino ewes at 2s 2d, 137 2-tooth crossbreds at 8s Bd, 413 crossbred lambs at 6s 4d, 126 crossbred wethers at 8s 9d. At Washdyke yards, the entries of fat sheep have been small, and confined to butchers’ lots. W"ell-conditioned stores are in good demand, and any lots offering meet a ready market, We sold 13 fat sheep at 9s 6d, 63 fat ewes at 9s, 50 fat 2-tooths at lie 7d, 42 fat ewes and wethers at 18s 6d, 25 ewes at 9s 3d, 198 crossbred lambs at Bs, and 86 fat ewes at 8s 6d to 8s 7d. Cattle—At Pleasant Point and also at'Washdyke there has been butdittle business doing in either fat or stores. For the latter there is really no de 3 mand. We have sold 4 bullocks at £5 12s 6d, 7 steers at £4 sa, 2 cows at £3, 1 do at £4 10s, 1 do at'£s, 2 do at £3, and privately 18 prime fat heifers.
: Pigs—The demand for stores is remarkably brisk at present, and high * prices have beep pbtained for all lots i offered. At Pleasant Point we sold 5 i at 12s, and 6at 13s, i ’ Skins—On account of Messrs i Biworthy, A. M. Clark, W. Grant, and others, we have disnosed of 6350 : factory skins at full rates. | i Auckland, March 7. , The Colonial Sugar Eefining Company have advanced the prices of Nos. 1,2, and 2 sugars £1 per ton. ENGLISH MARKETS. London, March 6. Frozen meat is unchanged. "Victorian onions have been landed in good order. Potatoes packed in hay are sound, but about half the remainder are rotten. Australian wheat, ex warehouse, 38s 6d. New Zealand long-berried do. ex store, 37s 6d; market firmer. Sugar, German beet, 12s' 6d, steady: Java, 15s. No. 1, best Scotch pig iron, f.o.b. in the Clyde, 50s 3d, steady. Wellington hemp averages £22 10s. Leather, beat, sides, 9d to 9fd per lb. The following is a copy of a telegram received by the Premier from the Agent-General, dated London, March 6: “ Hemp.-—A falling market; 300 bales New Zealand sold yesterday at £26 to £2O; manilla and sisal are both down.”
