TEMUKA LICENSING - COMMITTEE.

The first meeting of the newlyelected Licensing Committee took place at the court house, Temuka, yesterday. Present—Messrs Talbot, Bnsor, Meyer, Quinn, and Allan. On the motion of Mr Ensor, seconded by Mr Quinn, Mr J. Talbot was re-elected chairman for the ensuing session. TEAtfSEEES. A transfer of the license of the Winchester Hotel was granted to John Mclntosh on the application of Mary Farrell, the previous occupier. POLICE EEPORT, The police submitted a report on the various hotels in the district. The report was of a generally favorable character, but it was intimated that cases of drunkenness had occurred at the Royal Hotel, and that stricter supervision on the landlord’s part would be required in future. In the case of the Temuka Hotel the licensee had on several occasions been unable to attend to his duties.

Mr Raymond appeared on hehalt of the mortgagee of the Temuka property. He trusted that the bench would deal leniently in the matter of the license. Mr Fenton recognised his unsuitability as a licensee, and was making arrangements for placing a responsible person in charge. He asked that the present license might hold good until June, the annual licensing date. Constable Morton, in reply to the bench, said that the objection of the police only referred to the unsuitability ©f Mr Fenton as a licensee, not to the actual way in which the house had been conducted. Mr Raymond pointed out that Mr Fenton had verbally - admitted the truth of complaints made, but pointed out the hardship to the mortgagee if the license was cancelled. He trusted the bench would take this matter into consideration.

The chairman said it was certainly an exceptional case. Constable Morton said that no objection would be raised by the police if a responsible person were put in charge of the house. The committee retired, and after due deliberation returned, when the chairman said that the bench were of opinion that if the present licensee only were to be considered they would certainly cancel the license. As, however, so many other interests were involved they would allow the matter to stand over for a month. The committee would then meet and take further action, if necessary. Routine business was then transacted, and the meeting terminated.
