TEMUKA TOWN BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Temuka Town Board was held last evening. Present—Messrs K. F. Gray (chairman), S. Clinch, P. Coira, and G. J. Mason. CORRESPONDENCE, Correspondence was read

From Mr P, Wareing, enclosing rates, and stating that Mr J, W. Miles is

occupier of the premises known as the atone Store, and he should object to his name being on the rate roll this year for the same.—The clerk stated he had replied that he could not make the alteration suggested until he was properly authorised to do so.

From Mr A. E, G. Rhodes, in reply to a letter from the Board re loan for drainage and water works. Mr llhodea said he knew of no means by which

the Board could raise the money required without obtaining special powers by fresh legislation, and this could not be obtained until next session. He would like to

discuss the scheme and wishes of the Board when in Tetnuka.—The clerk was instructed to reply thanking Mr Rhodes, and id was decided to take no further steps in the matter at present From Mr F. W. Stubbs, Clerk to the County Council, asking for a return of the total valuation of the town district as shown by the rate roll.—The clerk to forward the necessary information.

OYEESEEU'S REPORT. The overseer’s report for the month

was read. Ho reported that the heavy traffic of traction engines, in addition to ordinary traffic, would render it necessary to call for tenders for a considerable

fdiiogliog contract shortly. The wear on the streets was very marked. He had written to Messrs Williams and Colville and Messrs Aspinall and Co., re damage caused to footpaths by heavy traffic to their premises, without the paths being sufficiently protected, but had received no

reply. Ho had spoken to Mr J. Browe re damage done to culvert over water ti.bie to the north of Mr Miles’s store, and ho had promised to have the same re-

paired, The culverts on railway terrace, leading to the station gales, had been slrongly repaired. He had issued notices to occupiers whose fences encroached on footways, and some had been trimmed at

once. He had written to Messrs Woollcombe end C'ulee, staling that if the ratm for Mrs Maud Thompson’s property were not forthcoming the board would have to sell it, but bad received no reply. Of the ten persons it was decided

at last meeting to sue for rales nine settled their claims, and only one allowed the case to go to Court. Others had also paid. A list ot defaulters was

laid on the table. The Board a surfaceman, Mr McGrath, had done a lot of work in cleaning water-tables ; the drains through reserve, and between Main, road and railway were clear, but many obstructions between that spot and the outlet needed removing, The lime allowed by the

Board for the registration of dogs expired ou Friday last, and up lo date 22 had been registered. He had received no refund of fees for dogs registered by Mr Gaze at Arowhepna last year. He was

informed- by Sdmond that the Board had « legitim .to case against the Arowhenua Board for refund of fees, and Mr Salmonr) was prepared to proceed on receipt of Board’* authority. Judgment was not obtained against the Arowhenua Board for a tefund of the registration fees of three dogs, but judgment was given against Mr A. VV. f 4 <.ze, as a private individual for one dog ; also stating that the agreement between the registrars was made in June, und the dogs in question were registered in April. He was therefore instructed, to state in reply to a request for a refund, that the Arowhenua Town Board did not see ile way to do anything further in the matter.

The chairman said he considered it a piece of bounce, but the question was whether it was worth while proceeding further.

In reply to a question, the clerk said lhat the Resident Magistrate, in giving •judgment against Mr Gaze for one dog, said “ if tha dogs are not registered in the proper district they ara net registered’ at all.” Mr Gaze was only proceeded against for one dog. Mr Mason said he agreed with the chairnun that it was a piece of bounce, and he was surprised at the Board backing up the cleik in such an action. He would propose—“ That the solicitor of the Board be instructed to take the necessary proceedings against the Arowhenua Town Board to recover thirty shillings illegally received by them for registration of three

doge.” Mr Clinch concurred, and after some further remarks the motion was seconded by Mr Coira, and carried unanimously. Mr Mason said in respect to the agreement made by the collectors re fees, he believed there was no necessity for any such thing, as the Ac' provided for it. UNREGISTERED DOGS. Proposed by Mr Coirn, seconded by Mr Clinch, and carried—“ That proceedings be taken at once against owners of all unregistered dogs in the township.”

ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £3l 8s Id were passed for payment. The meeting then terminated.
