Mr George Sumpter has been for the fourteenth time elected chairman of the Oamaru Harbor Board. The Christchurch Chamber of Commerce are in favor of increasing population in the colony, and want the railway charges between Christchurch and Timaru put on a par with those between Dunedin and Oamaru. Mr George Fisher, member for Wellington East, addressed a crowded meeting of electors on Thursday night. He urged on the electors of cities, so far as lay in their power, to put a check on the Conservative tendency which was so painfully apparent last session in what was termed "the country party."
