AN ILLINOIS DAIRY.

I have just looked over the herd of Mr GK A. Huff, the leading milk dairyman of Champaign, He tells me that six years ago at the first he ooph} not sell a the milk from seven cows. How he has 40 cows in milk. Like most in his line of dairying, he relies solely on purchasing cows, having never raised a calf. The best cows are kept some years, but a good many are sold to the butcher when dry. It is not aimed to have them get in calf for a number of months after coming in, the flow of milk being kept up longer in this way. The best cow in the herd last calved about Christmas 1885, and is not yet in calf; now giving about 3 gallons daily. This is an extreme case, both as to time and yield. Mr Huff has the opinion that unless cows are well fed they cannot be expected to give large quantities of milk, and has not found any loss in feeding all the cows will eat. If the cow converts the food into milk, the more the better j if she turns it into beef, still the more the better, for it is desired to turn off such a cow as soon as may be. Hor does he seem to believe it is necessary that a good milch cow shall be in thin flesh even when in flush of milk. The winter feeding is a peck measure, twice a day for each cow, of a mixture half corn meal, one-fourth bran, and one-fourth shorts. This is heavy grain feeding. In addition the cows have all the hay they will eat. The feeding of grain is kept up even when the cows are op full grass, the quantity, of course, being reduced, but not often belew half the amount stated. Mr Huff cannot give the exact yield of milk, but estimates it to average 2 gallons for each cow. The price of mdk, retailed, is 4 cents, a pint in winter, and 3-g- cents, I believe, in summer.— G. E.
