ACCIDENTS, FATALITIES, ETC.
Washington, Feb. 24. A reservoir, three miles long and three-quarters of a mile broad, burst at Prescott, iu Arizona, and forty people were drowned. A fearful scene of destruction followed. For miles below the reservoir the valley was swept clean of everything. Even rocks were hurledalong on the surface of the torrent like chips. The roaring of the water was heard for miles round. It is stated that there is not a single survivor in the district inundated below the hills where the dam was erected. The water submerged the town of Wickenbury, three miles below the dam, and the whole of the townsfolk perished. Chicago, Feb. 23. O’Donnell, convicted of bribing the Cronin jury, was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.
Melbourne, Feb. 24. A hotel was burned down at Ballarat yesterday. A man, named Thomas, was burnt to death and four others are missing.
mu * Stdnex, Feb. 24. Ifae man, Andrews, reported to be the son of an English Earl, who shot a clothier named Bartlett, in Eingr street last November, has been sentenced to death.
mi, rr r . Feb. 25. The Hunter river is 30 feet above its ordinary level, and Maitland residents are leaving their homes, fearing a flood. All business in that district is paralysed. Reports of floods attended with loss of stock and or great damage are coming in from the country districts.
Nabler, Feb. 25. ari unmarried woman named Macauley was found in a garden at Poraugahau with a newlvborn infant. The child was dead. At the inquest it appeared evident that the girl did not expect the birth for same time. A verdict of death from natural causes was returned. On Saturday, Simon Oriptil, master ot the steamer Fairy was struck on the neck by some bales of wool, which fell owing to the unloading tackle breakmg. He died on Monday,
Cheistchuech, Feb. 24. A. lad standing in Manchester Street, Christchurch on Monday morning was shot through the fleshy part of thigh by a bullet from a pea gun in the back yard of Barrett’s Hotel by the son of the proprietor who aimed at a target on the gate but missed it. I he _ bullet was extricated at the hospital. The patient is in no danger. Young Barrett and a lad named Charles Fisher were brought before the Police Court in the afternoon, charged with maliciously wounding and remanded for a week. Bail waa granted. Feb, 25. At Lyttelton on Tuesday a boy named Barnes, five years old, while looking over a wall over-balanced himself and fell a distance of 40ft, fracturing his skull and breaking his collarbone. He is not expected to recover, Dunedin, Feb. 25. ' James Denny, accountant to the Standard Insurance Company, has been arrested on a number of charges of embezzlement, r Jhe amount involved is supposed to be about £I4OO. The defalcations are said to have extended over some time.
