ST. SAVIOURS CHURCH, TEMUKA.
A. special meeting of the vestry in connection with the Building Committee, was held last evening to take steps in accordance with a resolution passed at the parishioners meeting, yiz., to “ proceed with the erection of a church on the new site, with the means at disposal, subscribers to u stone church to be written to and asked to affirm their subscriptions in the event of wood or other material being used.” It was found, however, that further steps could not be taken, the chairman having received a letter from Mr Hayhurstas follows : “ Green Hayes, Temuka, Beb. 17th, 1890. “ Rev. T. A. Hamilton, Temuka, “ Ret, and Hear Sib, After what I have heard and seen with reference to our offer of £250 and a site to build a new church on, I feel compelled to withdraw the offer unconditionally, Although the resolution for going on with the work was carried at your last general meeting of parishioners, the meeting cannot be regarded otherwise than as a miserable failure, lam told out of thirty present only nine voted, and out of about 170 voting papers sent out only about half were returned, and out of the half returned there were only a bare majority in favor of building on the site offered. In the face of all this I feel bound to withdraw all offers I have made. I would like to point out, also, that X consider the publishing of locals in the papers to the effect that I had withdrawn the offer, a breach of confidence, until after the withdrawal had been officially made. When I had decided to withdraw my offer I informed Mr Pinckney to that effect, because I had been told that he was going to send out certain letters, and I thought it a pity that they should go out after my decision. I sincerely sympathise witn you in your endeavors to build a new Church, especially as I believe during the time you have been Incumbent here you have done your best for you parishioners, as well as for the general public. Should you decide to leave here you will be sorely missed. With kind regards, I remain your faithfully, “ J. T. M. Hayhuest.”
The chairman expressed regret that the parishioners had been unable to agree in the matter, thus having forfeited a splendid offer and relinquishing no less a sum than £SBO out ot the £BOO calculated upon, this sum being now entirely lost to the parish. It would have been more satisfactory had all the parishioners assembled at the outset, and expressed disapproval before any canvassing had taken place. It was agreed to write to Mr Cane, and ask for his account, etc., for plans and drawings supplied. The meeting was then terminated with the Benediction,
