An eccentric watchmaker named Charles Q-olde was caught in an act of burglary at Waipawa on Wednesday night. He at one time posed as a prophet. A large quantity of stolen goods were found on his premises. Mr Dick, a well-known, solicitor, formerly of Dunedin, and son of the Hon. Mr Dick of that city, was drowned on Petane Beach, Auckland, on Wednesday, it is believed while bathing.
A man named William Hare, living at Kaeo, Auckland, whilst running to save his child from a falling tree fell and broke his neck. The child escaped. The bush fires in Ohaupo, Auckland, have practically subsided, One settler lost from £l5O to £2OO whilst owners of the bus>h also suffer heavily. At the Brightwater Court, Nelson, on Wednesday, four respectably-con-nected young men were fined 20s each for illegally killing deer.
