The third trial of the cruiser Barracouta proved a failure, the boiler exploding and injuring ten of the crew. Charlie Mitchell and Jem Mace had a boxing contest for £IOOO. In the fourth round Mitchell won easily. The Inspector-General of Police here says that the statement of the Paris Le lemps that only 32 convicts have escaped from New Caledonia during the last five years is ridiculous, for it is well known to the police that during that period the escapees numbered many hundreds The majority of them may not perhaps have escaped from immediate custody, but they get away from the islands by availing themselves of certain liberties granted to them.
